Life & Work with Deshun Baker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deshun Baker.

Hi Deshun, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
We basically started after closing on our home (in 2016) and debating if drapes should come before furniture. After visiting a few stores and meeting with an interior decorator we decided to do our own drapery project. This was an interesting process and we actually did a good enough job to pursue our neighbors request for drapes. After 3 or 4 projects someone asked do we offer blinds. This rang a bell and we immediately got our dba under Deluxe Designs. We were very excited about starting a business and decided to change the name to Deluxe Window Treatments when forming our LLC. Researching the window covering industry and products lead us to the name change. Getting our business bank account, logo, and reliable manufacturers was some of our most important start-up items. We can proudly say yes we offer blinds thanks to our first request. We’re currently very strong in shutters and motorized shades offering all interior window treatments and installation. We take pride in being very hands on with our customers therefore we do our own installations. Currently with a team of 10 including a licensed electrician to secure the low voltage hardwired jobs we’re on our way to competing with the best. This has been a life-changing experience and we’re just getting started. Being able to provide jobs, train staff, and see customers very appreciative of our hard work is one of many amazing feelings as a business owner.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been a pretty smooth road. We’ve put a team in place to become very successful in the industry. Architecture has laid a business-minded foundation for me as the CEO / founder of Deluxe Window Treatments. If I was to add a struggle it’ll be the hiring process and finding good skillful candidates to join our team.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
After being an educator, I decided to step away and pursue my degree in Architecture. I’m currently an Architectural Consultant for a commercial interior manufacturer. I consider myself a great leader therefore being an entrepreneur and business owner came to me a lot easier than others. Being an athlete, coaching, teaching, and now business owner has giving me a great mindset for success. I’d say I specialize in sales, customer service and problem-solving. I’m known for leading others and creating opportunities. I’m mostly proud of being able to support my family and provide jobs for those on our team. Having a passion for perfection sets me apart from others.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My advice would be to treat your business as a business and not a hustle. Meaning get the important people around you sooner than later such as a financial advisor (CPA), insurance agent, etc.
