Meet Lashelle Scott

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lashelle Scott.

Hi Lashelle, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. From there I moved to Washington, DC to be in the heart of politics. I left DC and moved to Houston, Texas in 2011. I got into politics by volunteering for campaigns for Barack Obama and Mayor Turner.

I chose politics as a life-calling and career path because even in 2022 it is still a male dominated environment and I wanted to run for office, work in my community, and lead by example. This last year and half has fueled my run for a higher office but to also run for re-election on a local level in Precinct 559.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has most definitely not been smooth. Besides facing a male dominated career. I have endured racism, sexism, sexual harassment, and in 2021 I was diagnosed with Stage 3 HER-2 positive breast cancer. During this fight I’ve had to fight with doctors, red tape with insurance companies and battle this disease.

It is truly an eye opener going through this fight and fighting for answers and help.

I know my voice is a valuable asset to pushing policy change for Black and Brown women who are fighting this disease, even as a precinct chair it is important to engage and advocate issues to higher elected officials.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am both an elected official. I serve as Precinct Chair for Precinct 559 in Houston, TX. I am also a political consultant. I am most proud of my political accomplishments and continuing to battle cancer while holding office, endorsing other candidates, and continuing to pursue higher elected offices.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Everyone needs a mentor in their field. Politics is a different world. Politics is about alliances. Friendships and mentorships are few and far between many times in the world of politics. Hopefully, that will change one day in the near future. But networking, connecting, and volunteering are all extremely important for your career and potentially the career of those that you may one day mentor.
