Meet Ian Tucker of Balls Out Burger in The Heights

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ian Tucker.

Ian, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am from Ireland, I moved to Houston in 2015 as my wife is a Houstonian. I own three businesses in the bar & restaurant industry in Ireland, under the umbrella of The Exchequer Group (www.theexchequer.ie). Since arriving in Houston, I have recently opened Balls Out Burger in the Heights in June of this year, and I am opening a full-service restaurant & cocktail bar named Poitin in Sawyer yards in May 2018.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Yes, pretty smooth. It took a long time to find the right premises but we got there in the end. The permitting process with the city of Houston also proved to be a bit of a struggle.

Please tell us about Balls Out Burger.
Balls Out Burger is a no frills, straight up burgers, concept. We specialize in beef burgers, made from the highest quality beef available in Texas, and with buns made fresh every day to our own special recipe. Our entire menu fits on a business card. We want our guests to get the full flavor of the meat and the bread so we don’t try to mask it with lots of toppings, so our only available toppings are bacon, cheese (yellow American only), lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, and jalapeno.

We are a big believer in supporting local, with all our products sourced in Texas. The beef is from 44 Farms, the bread from Slow Dough Bakery, Ice Cream from Amy’s, beer from St Arnold and wine from throughout Texas.

We are also extremely environmentally friendly. All our paper and plastic products are made from recycled materials and we recycle everything.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
The freedom to wander the countryside with friends carefree.

Pricing:

  • Burgers range from $7.50-$11.50
