Today we’d like to introduce you to Amarji King.
Hi Amarji, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Hello, my name is Amarji King! I’m a 20 year-old Dj, and creative. I started DJing in my bedroom at the start of the pandemic and hosted weekly livestreams on my Instagram live. I was blessed because at the time people really longed for new music and new energy, so everyone used those live streams as an escape for an hour or so. As the weeks progressed into the pandemic I got better and the livestreams got bigger to the point where a couple of local art collectives in my city, in New York, and even in Canada invited me to play for them virtually from my own bedroom and garage. At that time I was so shocked at how many people wanted to see a tiny little DJ dance like a crazy person and play house music on a livestream but it was what I needed and it was what they needed! Setting my reputation as the crazy virtual DJ really allowed me to experiment with cool mixes and include fun and exciting music in my sets. Finally when it was time to start playing live in front of people I was able to enter a community of free thinkers who accepted and uplifted my music. And the rest is history.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
When I first started (and even now) it was so hard to get the attention of the other DJs in my city. I play music made by and for queer people so there weren’t many events that wanted that kind of house music at their functions but thankfully more and more people are getting into and loving the music I play. For good reason too because it absolutely bops every time.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I play Funk, Classic House, and Ballroom/Vogue beats and dance like a crazy person. All of my music choices are based on dancing, and if I can’t dance to it I don’t want to play it. I value the freedom that dance gives me and give that same freedom to other people at every show. I pride myself in creating safe spaces for ALL people especially women and queer people. I’m very excited to know that my reputation as a DJ is based on true freedom of expression, and the people who come to my shows really invest at the moment and give it they’re all on the dance floor.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I’m so grateful to be in this cool ass city!!!
