Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Dorsey.
Hi Brian, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
It all started as an idea that a group of us had while having drinks. It was after the Kaepernick incident and during the peak awareness period just before the pandemic. We questioned if there were any Black Owned spirit producers in America and if their products were available in Texas. So, I took it upon myself to do some research on available Black-Owned domestic wine and spirit producers. To my surprise, I found a plethora of brands. At that point, I began the journey to contact these brands and come up with a way to bring them to the Texas consumer. What all started as a mere discussion amongst friends, turned into an actual mission statement.
Our aim is to be the propellant and/or accelerator to emerging and existing brands.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I come from a small Texas town with family ties to entrepreneurship. Which is one reason I chose the namesake for the company. However, we’re new to this industry. And like any new venture the challenges of being “the new guy”, funding and finding the right products for the market can be somewhat cumbersome. We have a unique niche which gives us a distinct advantage and adds a bit of intrigue (and sometimes apprehension) when approaching potential customers. With all of the recent Southern migration, we believe the Texas consumer is evolving to encompass much more diversity and complex palettes. Our goal is to source products that cater to those consumers. We embrace those contrasts because not only do they help give us a better understanding of the business and our customers but also give us information as to where we want to be as a company.

Dorsey Distributing Ltd is a TABC licensed family owned and operated wholesaler located in Houston Texas. The concept of the company was birthed in the Fall of 2019 and became operational in Spring of 2021. Our company specializes in sourcing, promoting, marketing and distributing products by Black and Minority Owned Wine and Spirits producers. We’re known for our distinctive portfolio of emerging brands and our over-the-top branding and promo campaigns (in conjunction with BlaqFriday Promotions) at various retailers throughout Texas. As a small company, what gives us an edge in this space is our ability to create value-added relationships between suppliers, distributors and retailers that translate into increased brand awareness and improved ROIs. We’re proud to offer services that are so unique to the space that our suppliers and retail partners see immediate results that are quantifiable and sustainable.
Dorsey Distributing Ltd is not only a brand but it is our namesake which signifies family. We consider our suppliers, distributors and retail-partners family. Therefore, consumers that choose to support our brands are ultimately our extended family members.
What were you like growing up?
I grew up in Port Arthur, Texas during the emergence of the Hip Hop culture (the 80’s). Although my mother’s tenacity and my father’s zeal for life have always been a guiding light throughout my developmental years, my love for the culture has always been a beacon. The culture has always been an influencer for me personally and professionally; therefore, a lot of my ideas/concepts have some roots tied directly to Hip Hop. I was the weird kid that looked at life differently. I wasn’t afraid to ask questions or challenge ideas. My mother encouraged me to be myself and allowed me to express myself. Hip Hop became that vehicle of self-expression. As I’ve matured, I’ve been able to channel those ideas into successful careers within the government contracting sectors as well as private industry. Now I’m using those lessons to venture into entrepreneurship.
