Today we’d like to introduce you to Andraya Talia Alexander.
Hi Andraya, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was raised in southeast Houston, from south park down 288 to Pearland. In 2017, I graduated high school from Manvel HS, a year later during spring break, I spontaneously moved to New Orleans where I met my husband, 4 years later we relocated back to Houston to raise our currently 9-month-old daughter.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Growing up in Houston, we are exposed to so much “Americanization” the capitalism & social pressure to conform to the beliefs of American culture. It looks to take away your individuality. As well as challenges your character and morals. In Houston, I feel that within the hustle culture we’re all fighting to preserve our individuality.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a creative in the community, I don’t want to tie myself down to one artistic outlet. I enjoy so many different mediums of expression, singing, dancing, painting, photography Even creative direction and modeling. Recently, since becoming a mother I’ve found love in creating sacred spaces for people to raise and enjoy their families. I’m hoping that one day these safe spaces will translate into a way to support pregnant African Americans and other pregnant ethnic minorities.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Today, we are expected by the portrayal of media to meet certain standards to be considered successful but they are only meant to keep us chasing unrealistic standards set by capitalism instead of focusing on things that are truly important. I want my peers to know that we are all more than the American dream. We like to read and love stories about instant gratification because it validates the ideology behind the American dream. It’s important to remember what really matters outside of the things media distracts us with.
