Rising Stars: Meet Kevin Tapia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Tapia.

Hi Kevin, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I was thirteen, Guitar Hero was my favorite video game, and every day after school, I would get my homework done as fast as possible just to get on the video game system to play. After playing so much, I thought that I was capable of learning how to play the guitar. My guitar hero, Carlos Santana, was a huge influence and it was because of his playing that I wanted to learn very badly. Coming from a Mexican household, it was very easy for me to start learning Spanish songs and I would practice them when there were family reunions. Fast forward to today, I have done so many things with music that I did not know I could’ve done if it was for my manager, Jose Perez, that believed in me since the day we met. I was invited twice to Univision, a famous Latin network, and performed live for them, and I have done the Great State Fair in Syracuse, NY three times and now I have done the Houston Latin Festival.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been many struggles, my parents’ divorce, being insecure about myself and my craft, and losing friends that I thought were friends, and the list goes on, but I found that music helps cope with the struggles of life. I would lose myself playing, creating, and writing new guitar melodies when I was feeling lost or hopeless, and it definitely helped me cope with my feelings.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I ran a painting family business with my father back in NY, and up until two years ago, I started a fitness journey that resulted in becoming a personal trainer, so now I’m starting up a business being a PT.

How do you think about happiness?
Myself. I learned that being myself makes me super happy because it is who I am. I’m just a very happy person and if I can shine happiness on anyone I will. I grew to be very positive and I can safely say that I have found myself reaching that level of happiness where I don’t need anything, or anyone to make me happy. Of course, music will always be something that adds to my happiness.
