Inspiring Conversations with Chris Schumacher of EC Entertainment

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Schumacher.

Hi Chris, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
This year, I will be celebrating my 18th year living in Houston. Born and raised in the UK just outside London, I left school and started working at Heathrow Airport for an airfreight company. Working there for over 10 years, I was then transferred to Singapore and Taiwan where I hung around some DJs and got interested in the Industry. In 2004, I moved to Houston, Texas. Still playing around with turntables and learning my craft, I got my 1st gig at a Mexican Restaurant Dj’ing for a Cinco de Mayo party and then moved on to bars and clubs. About 10 years ago, a friend asked me to DJ her wedding and after the event, the venue loved what I did and added my name – which was DJ English Chris – as a preferred vendor. That was the start of my Wedding DJ business. When I became too busy, I brought on other DJs and expanded and only last month, we brought on our 7th DJ.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
To be honest, it HAS been smooth. We really didn’t have too many challenges that we came up against. When we expand, we make sure the DJ is the right fit for the company. All our DJs are professional business people who have day jobs and have high regard for customer service. We look at personality first, then the technical ability of the person.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
In 2022, we rebranded the company name to EC Entertainment. Originally known as DJ English Chris, we are now a multi-operational company with many DJs and offering various services for your wedding day. When I started, DJ English Chris was just myself and to be honest, I think I won a lot of my business because of my name – and of course, my English accent. The American people do love an English accent let’s be honest. When I needed to expand and cover multiple events on the same day, my best friend was Scottish, and of course, a DJ, and it was the obvious next choice. With Roy and myself having weekday jobs, we didn’t need to charge as much as the competition and we started to get a reputation for high-quality service at a competitive price. This is still our philosophy today. When we started to offer additional services such as lighting, special effects we became more than a DJ service. When Covid 19 hit back in 2020, we were continually asked to supply live-stream services of ceremonies for guests that couldn’t make it so we then brought on a videographer. Today, we offer Audio and Visual services including pyrotechnics for our customers too.

How do you think about luck?
I really don’t believe in luck. If you work hard you will get rewarded and I have a high work ethic and try to treat each event I work as my own. I try and push this to my staff as well. I’m very lucky to have an amazing and supportive wife who knows that I’m doing all this to allow us to give our 2-year-old and 5-year-old the best start in life. Let’s be honest, I may work every day sometimes in a week but my wife has the hardest job in the world, being a mother and wife.
