Check Out Matthew Coats’ Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Coats.

Hi Matthew, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Prior to 2017, the 2008 economic downturn and personal tragedy put my dreams of private practice on hold. In 2017, after several years of working in corporate orthodontics, I purchased a part time practice in Tomball, TX. For the first four years, I worked two days in the Tomball practice (Coats Orthodontics) and four days a week in corporate orthodontics. Currently, I work three days in the Tomball practice and two days in corporate orthodontics currently. The end goal for me would be full time in my private practice.

My whole life, and especially in the last five years or so, many great men and women have stood beside me, advised me, prayed for me and backed me. Their belief in me and encouragement of me have sustained me during tough times. Richard and Cindy Gatewood of Tomball, TX have certainly been instrumental in any success that I may have had in Tomball. My children. Lauren and Landon have been a constant source of inspiration in my endeavors. Lauren is a special needs adult who lives in a group home in Texas. Landon has a degree in digital film from the Art Institute of Orange County. Landon is responsible for the film and photograph content for my website and advertising. He is very innovative and creative when it comes to his approach to promoting my practice. He seems to have a natural understanding of boutique, high touch businesses. My experienced, confident, loving team are an integral part of what Coats Orthodontics represents!

It seems everyone in their personal life and business life goes through significant ups and downs. I have learned as many business owners have learned that when times get tough that if I pray first and foremost, and then work the situation hard with the intent of overcoming any adversity that eventually one will come out victorious. I do not know that any business owner ever feels as if they have made it, are safe and can coast.

Recently, we moved into a new facility that we very much hope showcases the practice philosophy towards our patients, their families and orthodontic treatment. The new office is very much boutique style. We are a lovely smaller facility that focuses on high touch, patient centered treatment and personal relationships. The inspiration for my new office was the currently trending fabulous smaller boutique hotels. Many months of planning went into the creation of our new facility. Our new facility is a culmination of over thirty years of experience in the field of dentistry. We hope you love it!

Our goal is for our patient families to feel confident that we will create beautiful smiles that last a lifetime. For me, there is nothing more rewarding than to see a confident, beautiful smile radiating from our patients! We hope our wealth of experience is a blessing to all!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As stated in the prior segment, the road is never smooth. I think the road is more like an ancient Roman road that is very rough and bumpy, but a properly constructed roadway eventually will lead to success. Competition these days is fierce. Getting one message out is a daily constant. Finding, hiring and sustaining competent, the loving staff seems to be the most pressing issue these days. Especially since the beginning of the pandemic. I think our patient families see how much we love what we do, and this will ultimately sustain our practice. However, hard work, discipline and an unconditional commitment to excellence are always required.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in orthodontics. Meaning, I have been through a 27-month orthodontic training residency at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. Prior to attending my residency, I was a general dentist. During this time, I attended over 700 hours of continuing education and was a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry. Dentistry as a whole is an artistic profession to say the least. I think this is why dentists as a whole have such high expectations of themselves. My background in general dentistry prior to orthodontics gives me a unique experience set and perspective and understanding towards orthodontics. An orthodontist is most certainly an artist! Creativity is a must!

I hope we are known for how we love and cherish our patients. We attempt to consistently deliver amazing, beautiful, lifelong smiles! I think our wealth of experience in general dentistry and orthodontics sets us apart. To me, experience counts!

I am most proud of the thousands of beautiful smiles we have created throughout my career! I hope we have been a little part of helping create adults who love life, succeed wildly and are the next generation of leaders!

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
There is a trend for orthodontics, like most businesses, to go corporate or “do it yourself”. However, I think there will always be a market for the loving human touch. We all crave positive human interaction. I certainly make every effort to provide such an environment and treatment results. I feel the smiles we create are proof positive of this philosophy.
