Today we’d like to introduce you to Polly Bryant.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
“WE’RE ROBYN & POLLY – TWO MAMAS WHO HAVE A PASSION FOR CAPTURING BEAUTIFUL MEMORIES & HELPING YOU TO DO THE SAME!”
One early, hot morning, we packed our two littles in the car (with ALL their belongings) and headed to Houston’s Nature Arboretum. We put a little more effort than usual into our appearance that day because we knew we needed to be the women IN FRONT of the lens for a moment. I think we pulled it off! Anywho, we had our Canon Rebel T3 and T6 DSLRs, a lens or 2, and our tripods. We made our way, eventually and glistening, to a beautiful spot near a pond. Naturally, we dressed our children for the occasion and put them to work as our models! Everyone’s portfolio has to start somewhere!
We repeated this process at the same location and eventually found other spaces to practice on each other and the kiddos! It was a lot of work but so much fun! It set our souls on fire! Plus, we are best friends who love to spend time together so it is a win-win!
A LOT of research, trial and errors, frustrations, doubts, and even tears… we slowly and surely, got better! Sure we invested in gear but what we truly did and will continue to do is INVEST OUR TIME in learning and practicing. Whew.
On January 22, we held our 1st PayWhatYouWant Minis and it was truly magical! We had 4 amazing different sessions. Our very 1st session was a Boudior session, which is Poe’s absolute favorite. Next, we had a fun 3 generations session, 6-month-old cake smash cake session (baby fever, y’all!), and a family of 3 and Zeus the fur baby. It truly could not have been a better way to jump right into the world of photography. I mean, we even rented a local studio and utilized the 1 space for a variety of sessions. Our family session took it outdoors to the Nature Arboretum, aka back to our roots, where it all started!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I would definitely say it has been overall a smooth experience due to my attitude. This is a big learning curve. There is a lot to study, practice, implement, and such. My life experiences and being a teacher for 7 years have taught me that you must be FLEXIBLE. Sure, I get frustrated but those struggles have taught and will continue to teach me how to be a better photographer, business owner, and overall human being!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
A year ago, I left my career in education to stay at home with our now 18-month-old daughter. I needed to find an identity outside of wife and mama, which led me back to my first love; photography. I have been working with a camera, adobe programs, etc. since I was 11 years old. Let me tell you, technology has definitely changed and things are a bit easier than they used to be! I loved to make videos using adobe and had to scan each disposable camera photo onto the computer. Next, you had to find the perfect song to download from Limewire and hope it didn’t cause a virus. Ooops. Thank goodness Reels are sooo much easier and less time-consuming to make 😉
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I think having a career before launching ROE + POE Photography LLC has really played a role in my new business life. I love business and used to study it in high school. Photography is a passion that sets my soul on fire. So, when you add the two together it creates the perfect combination for me as a person.
