Inspiring Conversations with Courtney Hamilton of Braids By Coco Sha’Nae

Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Hamilton.

Courtney, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I remember being a little girl going to the beauty salon where my mother worked at. I always loved the smell, the ambience and the overall energy of the salon. One day while being dropped off at my grandmother’s house I told myself I would learn how to braid today. I had my little Barbie and kept trying until I finally got it. I’ve always been a determined individual so setting a goal and meeting it was right up my alley. In high school, I paid to get my hair done and told myself I could do it myself if I put my mind to it and so I started doing my own hair. Of course, naturally, people would ask who did my hair and When I’d tell them I did they wanted me to do theirs. My grandfather wouldn’t let us allow people into his house when he was working so I started doing hair in the garage. As time passed I would do hair as an adult on the side until one day I couldn’t take my call center job anymore. I quit my job on a whim and told myself I could do hair full time if I put my all into it. That was 2013 and here I am almost 8 years later thriving, excelling, happy, healthy, and looking to expand my horizons into other fields such as real estate.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
This road definitely hasn’t been smooth for me. I’ve dealt with TSW otherwise known as topical steroid withdrawal which contributed to depression. I’ve also gotten divorced from my first husband during this process while our child together was only 4 at the time.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Braids by Coco Sha’Nae focuses on the beautification of my clients through braids. There’s nothing like a black girl in some nice, neat braids that shines the light on the confidence she exudes. I love to make my clients feel at home when they sit in my chair and honestly over the years a lot of my clients have become family. I’ve listened to clients vent, cry, laugh and give uplifting words. There’s nothing like experiencing electric energy and that’s what I strive to give to each and every vessel that touches my chair. I offer regular box braids, Knotless box braids, box braids over locs, kids braids, and more. You should definitely visit my website www.braidsbycocoshanae.as.me to book your appointment!

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love that Houston is a melting pot! I’ve met clients from Detroit, South Carolina, California, Dallas, St.Thomas, etc. There’s not much that I don’t like about Houston other than the rising cost of living.

Pricing:

  • Regular box braids starting at $100
  • Knotless box braids starting at $215
  • Kids’ braids starting at $65
