Today we’d like to introduce you to L. Michael Akens.
Hi L. Michael, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
For as long as I can remember, I have had a deep love and appreciation for architecture and interior design. I was very fortunate to have attended university at a time when Houston Texas was undergoing a mass migration to our city causing a boom in our high-end residential housing market, as a result, I was able to engulf myself in various cultures and artistic designs. After finishing university like most people I found it extremely hard to find a job in my career field (Industrial Design). While continuing my job search I sought out ways to keep my creative brain flowing. In 2019 I started buying vintage furniture and exploring ways to bring them back to life by way of either upholstery, new woodwork or a complete redesign all together. After a two-year struggle, Covid 19 sent the world into lockdown, leaving the job market nonexistent. Sitting at home I felt like now was the time to do what I wanted to do (Interior design) and in March 2020 I took the leap and started MADstudio. I started with my own personal residence furnishing it with various furniture pieces and art Id accumulated and made over the previous year to create my portfolio. I then used it to pitch to potential clients and the ball has been slowly rolling ever since. In the course of two and a half years, MADstudio has become a steadily growing business. We are happy to announce that we will be launching our curated vintage furniture line under the name MAD in Residence coming July 2022.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It was a somewhat difficult process especially in the beginning, Not knowing anyone in the design world of Houston left me to figure out a lot of things for myself. But I was able to connect with some amazing women outside of Houston who really helped me navigate this new world. I’m forever grateful to Laura Mckee of L Hamilton&co and Sophie Ashby of Studio Ashby for the advice and opportunity they have given and continue to give.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
MADstudio is a residential interior design firm/furniture curator that focuses on creating a space that encompasses the individual that dwells in it.
We seek to create spaces that promote relaxation, rejuvenation, and social well-being.
We design for the modern individual who wishes to create their own private moment in time.
Our style is a massive blend of Neutral Post Modernism, wabi sabi with hints of Urban Sophistication.
During my creative design process, we look for unique pieces that cater to the client’s personality.
Finding perfection in imperfect pieces is our ethos.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I’m obsessed with jazz music and old movies.
I feel jazz music can touch every emotion the human body can produce (Don’t @ me lol)
