Today we’d like to introduce you to Ishita Chakravarty.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Ishita. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
After college, I moved to South Korea to teach English. Over there with my tiny studio apartment, I still couldn’t keep myself out of the kitchen. I missed baked goods from back home and soon found out that so did my fellow expats. So I started baking cupcakes (in my mini microwave oven) and selling them at our local pub. That is where Deelish Cupcakes was born. After I came back, my mom and I decided to blend American and Indian culture and come up with something people just couldn’t resist. A true melting pot of desserts combining cultural flavors with well known American classics. A couple weddings later, here I am doing primarily wedding catering and wholesale to restaurants.
Has it been a smooth road?
The biggest problem I’ve faced is convincing people that I’m going to be able to provide what they need. Being so young and the owner of a business is a struggle for many reasons. One of the biggest reasons is that people wonder whether you’re going to be able to do what you’re saying you can. They may not take you as seriously as a “well” established business, as someone who’s been doing the same thing for 20 years. I convince people with my product, plain and simple. I let my desserts shine and assure people that we care about each and every piece of dessert going out and we want people to be 100% satisfied.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
The specialty of Deelish Cupcakes is that not only do we have unique flavors in many different varieties of desserts, but we also allow client input to accommodate each type of individual taste. If someone is interested in a flavor we don’t have or something they thought of and think would be delicious, we are more than happy to create that for them. Also, since our flavors are culturally inspired, they bridge a generational gap allowing all age groups of people to get excited. We are known for a lot of our Indian inspired cupcakes and we are definitely proud of them because they are the reason we are able to cater so many weddings.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Houston is a truly a melting pot of cultures. There are people here from all over the world and we get to enjoy all kinds of flavors for that reason. Since Houstonians are so accustomed to this kind of diversity, I feel like they are very open to trying all kinds of foods. For that reason, Houston is a great place to start something new and unique. Yes, we have a lot of food already. But we are always open to trying more.
