Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Cantu.
Hi Melissa, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
At a very young age, I knew I loved makeup. It wasn’t the transformation that caught my eye, but how it would make the person feel. Seeing them feel confident, beautiful, and fierce was what I loved. In High School, I started to do makeup for prom with friends. How I managed with very few products was amazing, but I made it work.
I always knew I wanted to help people and I thought the only way to achieve that was being in the medical field. I come from a family where all my siblings had college degrees and great jobs, so I assumed if I went into the beauty industry it would not be a “real job”. That I had to do more for me and my family. So for many years, I worked in a doctor’s office. While I loved every bit of it, I knew something was still missing. I wanted to help people, but not in this way.
Throughout these years I still did hair and makeup for family and friends. It wasn’t until someone told me, “You are really good at what you do. Why don’t you go to Cosmetology School and get your license?”. That’s when it dawned on me, that yeah, this can be a job. So that same year I signed up for school and in 2015 I graduated with my Cosmetology License.
Being married and becoming a blended family was a blessing but also challenging. Having to raise 4 kids was hard, especially since I knew working at a salon I would need to have a full-time schedule. Even trying to work at Ulta, Sephora, or any makeup store was difficult. No one seemed to be able to work around my “mom” schedule. Quickly doubt stepped in. But God reassured me that ” I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” Philippians 4:13. I wasn’t going to let all these “no’s” define me, so I said to myself if no one can work around my schedule, I’ll work for myself.
I’ve been a freelance Makeup Artist for over seven years and just this year I got certified in Permanent Makeup for Ombre Powder Brows. Being able to make people feel beautiful is the best part of my day, and now with permanent makeup, they get to wake up and feel beautiful every day. I don’t know what God has in store for me but what I do know is that he is taking me out of my comfort zone and is saying, “You are who I say you are”. So stay tuned because more is yet to come.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. From daily life setbacks to having almost no clients during the pandemic, and having a baby in 2021 has been a whirlwind of emotions. One major thing I have struggled with is comparing myself to others. Some would even say I am my worst critic. But bringing joy to that one person in my chair is what I love the most. Now, having that one person in my chair giving me words of encouragement and letting me know that I am who God has called me to be has been a blessing. Now I am learning to see the beauty through any struggles or setbacks and learning to love where I’m at.

What sets me apart from others is being able to give my clients their desired look while enhancing their natural beauty. I enjoy making my clients feel comfortable and love being able to share my beauty tips and tricks with them. I love building relationships with my clients because it helps me make their vision come to life and develop trust. They may come in a stranger but always leave a friend.
