Meet Meredith Schmuck

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meredith Schmuck.

Hi Meredith, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have been a stay-at-home mom for three years now. A little over a year ago I was trying to figure out a hobby for me to try while my boys were napping to get my creative juices flowing again. I had been watching tons of cake decorating videos during those late nights awake so decided to give cake baking and decorating a try.

I like to say I’m a baker by accident because of this! My first couple of cakes weren’t the best but I kept trying different recipes and finally figured out the perfect cake, baking procedures and perfected my buttercream.

I started selling them for cheap to my neighbors and the feedback was very encouraging. I just kept going and here I am today.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
At the beginning my cakes were dry, my buttercream was bubbly and overly sweet. I had several kind neighbors test my cakes and give me honest feedback that helped me so much.

Today my biggest struggle is dealing with the rising costs of ingredients and materials. Although this started as a small hobby, it’s turned into a way to help support my family. Raising prices is difficult but necessary.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a cottage baker making scratch-made cakes, cookies, cake balls, gourmet brownies and more. I almost exclusively use buttercream on my cakes. I’m not a huge fan of fondant.

I think I’m known for delicious baked treats and I’ve been given glowing reviews of my buttercream.

I’m most proud of being willing to try new things. When something doesn’t work, I will not rest until I figure it out.

I want everyone who tries my baked goods to leave feeling happy and satisfied.

What sets me apart is my cake balls. I have so many loyal customers that order those consistently. And I really enjoy making them!

Any big plans?
My main goals right now are personal fulfillment and helping my family a little bit with my small business.
