Conversations with Dulce Turrubiartes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dulce Turrubiartes.

Hi Dulce, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started my beauty journey in 2016 as a Licensed Cosmetologist and started looking for salon jobs since I wasn’t sure what beauty career path I wanted to do. I ended up working at 2 hair salons and 1 lash salon at the same time for 3 months until lash extensions grabbed my attention since I barely knew about that service and hardly any lash salons existed. I believe the 20-year-old me took an interest because it was something rarely spoken about in my beauty school and that excited me since it felt unique and different. I later quit my other two Salon jobs and started Learning about Lash Extensions in June 2016.

BUT It turns out… I disliked it and I almost quit.

While learning how to use the tools.. my hands hurt and it was so difficult to isolate one eyelash with super sharp tweezers. Eventually, my co-workers at the time hyped me up and told me to not give up and just push through. So I did that and trained my hands to gain their own muscle memory for over a month. Then It became a bit easier and I gained confidence and was allowed to take paying clients at 2-3months into Lashing. Lashing is no joke and should be performed by a licensed professional to avoid infection and so forth.

Nowadays the training quality is so much better and accessible for new people wanting to learn this career. It did take me longer to learn but I’m grateful that I started back then and my time is now. I wish I started sooner but realistically speaking I feel like my path was meant for me at this very moment. Back then I did wish but it’s okay since I feel more prepared, confident and focused which I don’t think younger me could’ve done.

It’s been 1yr and 5 months since I started my business and gone on my own full time with no back up job. I’ve been in the lash industry for 7years and I’m so proud of where I am today.

By putting myself out there and talking to any person that is interested in my services and to show them why they should book an appointment with me has led to the success of helping me build clientele. I still speak about my business even to the Target employee, the barista at Starbucks whoever wants to listen. Make it be known! Be seen because someone will relate to you and would love to support you and your talents!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Covid-19 really gave me that push I really needed to take that leap of faith into risking it all. Plus Having a fresh start with hardly any new clients that I had to build on my own. Everything has its pros and cons and one big pro is that having no client’s helped me shape my business into what I wanted it to look like long term. It has not been smooth. Nothing was handed to me…I didn’t have a lot of financial support, family that could believe in me in the beginning. I’m so thankful for now having such an amazing support system and that being my clients, other artists, family, and myself.

Everything I had was bought with my own money from my business. It’s been tough learning a whole new side of running a business with no experience or degree. After taking endless marketing classes, business coaching classes, bookkeeping classes, taking before and after pictures of my work and investing money back into the business rather than treating myself to a nice vacation. Has finally paid off!

I know for a fact that having a business will always have its own struggles. I do think that some struggles will get easier for me with time and experience. Luckily now I’ve developed some enjoyment learning more about the backend of the business since it’s so new to me. I realized that I wanna learn more because it’s helped so much in the business growth that I’m now capable of taking more free time to take trips and enjoy more personal time. I even saved up enough for a class that I never thought I could ever do because it was out of my reach financially.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
