Today we’d like to introduce you to William Sharpe III.
Hi William, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always had an innate passion for connecting with people. Before entering college, I knew I wanted to be the guy who people come and talk to about their problems. After earning an undergraduate degree in psychology from Elizabeth City State University in Elizabeth City, NC, I went on to gain valuable field experience in the state of Virginia. While working in the mental health field as a qualified mental health professional (QMHP) I simultaneously went to school to finish a master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling. After acquiring my graduate degree in 2019, I moved to the lone star state and began to gain more field experience in the city of Houston. Now I find myself proudly and humbly serving in my longtime sought-after career, as a licensed professional counselor (LPC).
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road to being a licensed counselor and owner of a private practice has been full of twists and turns. Some expected, along with many unplanned experiences. One of the biggest struggles was maintaining a healthy balance between financial stability and giving everything I could to chase after my dream of becoming a fully licensed practitioner. Oftentimes, aspirants within the mental health field have to sacrifice by working either without pay or for subpar wages until they become fully licensed.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Breakthrough With A Therapist?
We may be a small practice but we care in a huge way! Breakthrough With A Therapist is a private counseling practice, serving the community by providing individual outpatient and couples therapy. Services are conducted in person and virtually upon request. We serve a wide variety of populations to include adolescents and adults who experience a number of mental/emotional disturbances, by employing the use of evidence-based practices. Although we are able to treat a plethora of problems, we do particularly well with helping clients who experience depression, anxiety, men’s issues, relationship/communication problems, self-image struggles, and anger management difficulties. As a practitioner, I utilize a unique therapeutic approach by the name of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT). I love this style of therapy because it pushes clients to become more efficient versions of themselves and it actually works! Therapy can be intimidating for a lot of people, and when someone decides to take that first step, I want to ensure that I meet them with quality therapy.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
To find a mentor, it is important to first expand your network. Networking is priceless because one will never know how impactful the next connection may be! I have been blessed throughout the years to be connected to some of the most inspiring role models and advocates of the mental health field.
