Meet Viridiana Shumate of Viridiana Artistry in Memorial City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Viridiana Shumate.

Viridiana, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
It all started in Los Angeles, California. As a teenager, I moved from Mexico to the Los Angeles area and became enamored with the beauty industry and the passion to help people feel beautiful inside and out. Initially, I studied under celebrity makeup artist Pricilla Ono. After graduating her program, I focused all of my time and energy into developing a successful freelance makeup artistry business that mostly catered to the entertainment industry.

Fast forward to 2010, my husband and I moved to Houston. Sad to leave California behind but still interested in furthering my career, I studied with Extreme Lashes to become an eyelash stylist.

Shortly thereafter, I opened a makeup studio in Sharpstown mall where I devoted time and energy into building clientele in the Quinceañera industry while continuing to maintain ties to the Houston fashion industry. My work is now consistently featured in the annual Weddings and Quinceañera magazine.

I eventually earned my esthetician’s license and currently work in the Memorial City area.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I wish I could say it has been easy! The reality is that on the road to building my own business, I have encountered numerous setbacks and obstacles. I think that every business owner could say the same.

One of the toughest decisions was to close my first studio to go back to school full time and get my license as an esthetician. I felt like I was a failure and that my career was stuck in reverse. Looking at it in hindsight, it was a difficult decision to make but totally worth it.

One of the toughest things is just there are days when there are no calls or messages, not a single soul came in, no “likes”, no new “followers”.

And then I decided to move to memorial city where I continue my work as an esthetician.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Viridiana Artistry – what should we know?
Viridiana Artistry specializes in makeup styling, eyelash extensions, facials, hair removal, and eyebrow maintenance. Private or group makeup classes can also be booked with advance notice. I take pride in what I do and my clients know it.

The thing I feel that sets me apart from other businesses is my philosophy toward customer service. This is more than a job to me, I strive to make bonds with my clients and over time, some of them have actually become my friends. We girls have to stick together!

I work very hard to make sure everyone leaves feeling like it was all about them, that they got the full “girlfriend experience” by visiting me. Everyone leaves feeling renewed, restored, and extra beautiful!

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
First and foremost my husband, Scott. He has been my most devoted supporter and continues to be in all areas of my life. He is my rock.

Jaqui Espinoza, a local photographer. She has opened a lot of doors for me in the Quinceañera industry.

Polly Flowers, owner of Salon Social, where I’m currently located. She is a loyal client and promoter of Viridiana Artistry.

And, of course, all of my loyal clients that have made everything possible!
