Community Highlights: Meet Yael Gurwitz-Elkin of Anew Chiropractic

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yael Gurwitz-Elkin.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My story…as a child, I was a very sick kid and took medication all the time. By the time I was 12, they told my parents I am immune to augmentin which at the time was the strongest antibiotic there was. At 12, I had chronic headaches and popped Advil daily, was addicted to Afrin, and was just a sick kid.

I also was a dancer and injured my hip. My mom took me to an ortho and they said I would need surgery. I would walk and get extreme pain and drop to the ground. My mom decided to research for alternative options and found a chiropractor 45mins away from where we lived. I went to him due to hip pain 3x/wk for four weeks total of 12 visits and NEVER had hip pain again! But what was more amazing was that was the first month I didn’t get sick, have headaches, take any meds. This doctor changed my life! At that point, I knew I wanted to be a chiropractor and help people heal naturally just like I did. It had been over 20 years from the point that I took any meds or headache medicine. Since I was a little girl, I knew I would be a doctor and would work with kids but didn’t know what kind until I had this life-changing experience.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was a long road….I went to the University of Delaware and was a double major and worked on weekends. I worked hard in undergrad and then went straight to chiropractic school – it was non-stop! In chiropractic school, I had three jobs and went to school. My boards were tough! I got my first failed board in chiropractic school and it was heartbreaking! I missed passing by one point. It was rough and I had to re-take my 2nd boards to move on to my 3rd and 4th board but I had to wait six months before I could take them again. When I first came out of school, I worked for another chiropractor as a slave and did everything from 6am-6pm five days a week and barely made $300/wk. I was loving to pay Ck and couldn’t really afford anything. I remember eating cereal for a week for every meal because that is all I could afford. It was not an easy journey when I started but I was determined to work hard learn a lot and open my own practice. I had a successful practice in Florida for 8yrs until my work partner had a midlife crisis and a divorce and it was a horrible situation. I walked away from my practice taking nothing and starting from scratch when I moved to Texas. I had a baby and two years old and knew NO ONE. I started to meet some moms and was seeing moms and babies out of my house for three months until I was able to find a place to practice. I was fortunate enough to meet my partner Dr. LeBouef and start practicing at Anew. It was hard to start a practice from scratch but I did it! Lots of girt and networking and meeting amazing people helped me build my practice to what it is and I am grateful to each person my path has crossed with.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At Anew, we offer both of the best worlds. I am pediatric and prenatal certified and my partner Dr. LeBouef is sports and acupuncture certified. We see everyone from womb to tomb and it’s truly amazing! I love our practice because it encompasses different modalities like dry needling, cold laser, spinal decompression, soft tissue work and massage. We have 4 amazing massage therapists that offers a variety of massages from lymphatic, to cupping, to cranial sacral therapy, deep tissue and more. We also offer nutritional testing for food sensitivities and vitamin deficiencies., supplementation, oils and more. We try to have an all-around practice.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
In order to succeed, you always have to take a risk. Without risks, you won’t ever know if you will succeed. My husband and I have taken many risks like investing in different businesses and have been lucky to succeed. We dabble in AirbNBs, we own a few Tune Up the Manly Salons, Rv rentals and are always looking for more investments and they all usually involve a risk. Starting your own business is a risk but on the flip side it is so rewarding you work hard for yourself and make what you want of it.
