Meet L.J Henderson of Little STEM Academy & Little STEM Lab Kits.

Today we’d like to introduce you to L.J Henderson.

Hi L.J, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
As the founder of Little Stem Academy, I believe the best way to begin is at the beginning with PreK appropriate programs to make STEM a part of everyday life. Researchers agree the brain is 90% developed by age five and the gap in learning appears as early as kindergarten and first grade, implicating that the study of concepts in math and science should be a strong component of the preschool curriculum. With this in mind, I insist it is important to institute a regular regimen of science and technology in every preschooler’s educational diet.

During the pandemic, when schools temporarily closed down and remote learning was the only option for school age children, I stepped up being a former educator to assist with virtual learning. Immediately I realized that 1st-3rd grade students had severe deficits in mathematics. After evaluating a few preschool programs in the area I noticed that math readiness components were lacking. So I decided to put together a new program that challenged a children’s critical thinking and problem-solving skills at the preschool level. According to the Committee on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Education of the National Science and Technology Council, “it is critical to our national security that our students spark interest in critical and fast-growing careers in STEM.” Me and the team are building an engaging, technology-rich program to draw young minds into these fields.

As The Communicative Disorder expert with two master’s degrees, I knew the time to act is now. The state-of-the-art programs are making STEM a way of life for students of color particularly. Through my multi-ethnic team, I’m bridging the conversation of race and education by bringing people with brown hues in front of the classroom to model STEM awareness.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Some challenges I would say, for one is sourcing the materials have been an issue for a while just because we all have had some supply chain issues right; Sourcing some of the materials for the lab kits in particular. I’m working out shipping details now going from a brick in mortar to an online business, just those learning curves that come with new business ventures. Then Now, seeing that it’s a greater need just the lab kits they need the instructions, so now I have to have a tech team. I have to be prepared for interviews. It’s just a learning process but I’m riding the wave and I’m enjoying it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
The little STEM Academy provides an electrifying education for children ages 3 to 7 years old with a focus in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
