Today we’d like to introduce you to Deanna Lewis.
Hi Deanna, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I was younger, I couldn’t imagine this being my life. But then again, no one who’s an influencer probably could. I was in my junior year of college in 2016 when I went to Daytona beach with my friend. She took an off-guard picture of me and I uploaded it to Instagram, not thinking much of it. I went to sleep with maybe 200 likes and woke up to thousands. I got reposted to so many different pages and my following grew from about 5,000 followers to about 10,000 overnight. A couple of weeks later, a few hair companies reached out to me and I started to venture into hair modeling. About two months later, I took a picture with Fashion Nova boots on. Fashion Nova liked and commented on the picture. I was so excited! Then a few days later, they reached out to me to collaborate. I’ve been working with them ever since September 2016. As the years went by, I gained a larger following, more interest from companies, and I eventually became a fashion influencer. It’s crazy how one picture changed my life and now I am a full-time influencer.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. Getting reposted to so many different pages come with a ton of critiques. You get judged on everything as an influencer. Your weight, looks, makeup, hair…just everything. Some of the comments were so mean that I didn’t know if I would be able to deal with it but throughout the years, I’ve gained thicker skin. When the shade room posted me, it was so hard not to read the comments because I knew some would hurt my feelings. Honestly, it’s just what comes with the territory. Instagram is helpful now with comment controls but I can definitely say it hasn’t been the easiest road to learn to not care what others think of you.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in fashion and just being me. I am confident in my skin and I wear what I want. I think that inspires other women to do the same and not focus on what other people think. I am most proud of building my platform organically and building it exactly how I want it. I’m not focused on pleasing others. I do what is best for me and my platform. I think what sets me apart from others is that I live my based on my own thoughts and not others. I’m definitely living my life for me and only me.
