Rising Stars: Meet Alexus and Geramey Coleman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexus and Geramey Coleman.

Hi Alexus and Geramey, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
During the pandemic, we like the rest of the world, spent a lot of time in our homes. I (Alexus) was working from home while also caring for our newborn son. Outside of these things, I didn’t really have a hobby. I knew this could potentially lead to me “losing myself” so I asked Geramey if he’d be interested in starting a podcast. We ruffled around with a few ideas. But ultimately landed on a podcast centered around black love because it directly aligned with our journey.

It’s been an interesting ride, but one of the most enjoyable experiences we’ve ever had.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I wouldn’t say a smooth road because we’ve definitely experienced some rocky situations, however, it has been enjoyable. There have been days where we wanted to quit doing the podcast because the time it took was so overwhelming. Then the financial burden of having a podcast, a quality one at that, has been a struggle. We’ve poured a lot of time and money into this brand, and at times it feels draining. Then we remember our purpose and it all starts to make sense again. Everything we’ve been through has sculpted us into the brand we are now and ultimately has led us to achieve our mission. Understanding that gives us peace and ultimately allows us to lay back and enjoy where The Most High takes us.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I think what sets Ode to Black Love apart is our ability to create conversations that provoke dialogue between our listeners/community. Our commitment to authenticity and sharing the realities of black people is our driver and it always grounds us.

In regards to what we’re proud of, I’d like to say it’s the community we’ve created. We’re reaching black people all over. We had a young woman in Sydney, Australia reach out to us letting us know she loved our podcast. We’ve also established a notable name in our community which feels really good.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I think the podcasting industry is going to continue to grow and expand to other communities. I think podcasts and video podcasts will begin to be invested in similarly to TV shows and movies. Everyone will have a podcast they enjoy and support. Hopefully, OBL is one of them.
