Today we’d like to introduce you to Nichola Tait.
Hi Nichola, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
From the time I was little, I have always been fascinated by the transformative power of makeup. I am a self-taught artist and love how much confidence and power I can bring to women and men. I started off when I was young by painting my friend’s nails every color in the rainbow. In high school, I was always doing my friend’s makeup for talent shows, date nights and fashion shows. I obtained my Cidesco esthetician license and massage license after high school in 2004. I worked in Day Spas for over a decade doing facials, prom makeup bridal makeup, waxing and taught classes. I love to do makeup for brides, prom and others who are celebrating big events as well. Currently, this year I am doing makeup for photo shoots and films. I did makeup for my first film Deception in May 2022. I am currently teaching myself special effects for wounds and tattoos for Valhalla Awaits which will be filming in fall 2022.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Life has definitely been a journey with major ups and downs trying to figure out how to be my authentic self. I am glad to say I feel like I am growing in the right direction despite the hardships. I left an abusive partnership when it became clear I could no longer hang on without ending up in a grave/prison/or on the street. I am so grateful for the family friends and therapists who worked with me to recover. I am grateful I was able to find and receive intensive care and get back on my feet. I was able to go from homeless to homeowner in under seven years!
The pandemic was especially tough because my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer shortly after quarantine. I was so frustrated that I couldn’t come to see her, hug her, take her to treatment. I ended up creating a coloring book of flowers since I could not bring her any. I hope to release it for sale when I am able to finish and donate some of the money towards charities that help families dealing with cancer.
All of this turmoil and drama has lit a fire in me. I learned during the pandemic that I want to work for myself full time doing makeup jobs with creative themes and create coloring book pages that benefit charities. I am so glad that the world is opening back up from the quarantines. I am eager to get back to helping brides receive their glow-up on their big days. I am eager to get back on set turning people into monsters. I am eager to get back into the creative community
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a Freelance Makeup Artist with a passion for putting pigment on people. Creator of coloring book pages and other crafts. I aspire to grow as an artist and to create a loving empathetic creative community where we uplift one another. For makeup, I work with teenagers getting ready for prom, LGTBQA+ members wanting to be their authentic selves, brides and their bridal parties. I love that I am able to help people feel and look their best. Recently I have been blessed with getting more into the theatrical and performing side of makeup. I am actively looking for projects in the community big and small that I can add my artistic flair to. I can do very realistic-looking wounds and have been working on learning face painting. I really love working with circus performers and on film sets. The techniques between doing a glam prom look and creating a zombie are so varied it always keeps me engaged and driven to learn.
Although I have done many subtle natural glam looks my adoration of color and creativity always shines through. I am most proud that I am adaptable to the project given to me. I love a challenge and love teaching myself new techniques for collaborations and projects. What sets me apart from others is I love to teach and promote self-love through art. This includes everything from teaching others to do makeup to how to collage. I have many people who express they admire my creative drive and I encourage them all to come and join me. Sometimes we collage, sometimes we doodle, sometimes we have fun with makeup and transformation. I am known for being eager to work on creative projects. Working hard collaborating on projects fills me with such joy. I am so thankful to live in a time where connecting with others has become so much more accessible.
I am most proud that through my success as a makeup artist I was able to be recommended to start working in the film industry. I always thought that to work in a film I would need to move to Hollywood. Now I am living a dream that I previously thought was impossible and meeting amazing new people who inspire me to keep reaching for the stars
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
