Meet Simon Ly of Simon Ly Photography in Southwest Side

Today we’d like to introduce you to Simon Ly.

Simon, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Photography started out randomly for myself, it was never intentional. I was successfully running a business and I needed pictures to advertise. One thing led to another and I found myself buying photography equipment and taking better pictures of the product myself.

After my friend booked his first wedding he asked me to join him and I found myself enjoying the process of taking beautiful wedding pictures. There is just a timeless feel to the film that I could never replicate with digital so I finally switched over all to Film Photography and enjoyed it ever since.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t think photography or anything would be considered a smooth road. It’s always a challenge to prove to not only yourself but everyone in the industry that your art is worth something. The same holds true for historic art pieces that were never valued in its time but after the artist past away did the item’s value surge astronomically.

One of my main struggles is to find challenges to share with people that my art and vision is worth something. Our main belief system is so ingrained in society and social media that we as an artist have to educate people what the true differences in our art is.

Simon Ly Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My Business is a Fine Art Wedding Photography Business.

We specialize in Fine-Art Portraiture, The type of photography that is not the same as mainstream society, we shoot with professional film camera’s from the 1990’s and it is a style defined by not just beauty but elegance combined.

As a company, what I am most proud of is the ability to provide a family heirloom to the families and couples that book me. Being able to share with them my artistic vision and beauty and watching them smile is what makes it all worth it. Art is a vision and when you can share that vision with someone else, it becomes real.

What really separates myself from others is the careful detail to attention that many others lack. Slowing down is important because every moment is only seconds away.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment of my career is couples trusting in me to travel with them and capture their most memorable moments abroad.

Trust is fundamental and I am proud that the couples that hire me, trust me in my artistic vision and abilities.
