Conversations with Melody Barlow

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melody Barlow.

Hi Melody, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
In 2008 I was newly divorced and needed to figure out the best way to keep the roof over our heads. A real estate broker friend suggested that I consider getting my real estate license, and he bought me the book for the first class. I would take a class, study for the test, take the test, pass it, and buy the next required class. I got my license in January 2009. 2009, 2010, and 2011 were tough years to be starting out in real estate, but I survived. 2012 and 2013 started to improve, and 2014 was my 6th and best year yet. In September 2015, I became the Director of Agent Development for our CB&A, Realtor’s brokerage. I still sell real estate full-time, manage a small team, and recruit and support our NW Houston location. Am I busy? Most definitely! Do I love what I do? Most definitely!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Getting my real estate license in January 2009 was not a great time in the real estate market. There were a ton of foreclosures and short sales. I stayed consistent with having at least one open house every single weekend for the first year. All of my clients came from open houses in the beginning. It took several years before my sphere of influence started using me as their go-to Realtor.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I graduated from Texas A & M in December 1989 and moved to Houston for my first job post-college. I was in the medical field for a decade, then transitioned to the dental field for my second career, and finally to real estate when I was almost 40. I still worked in Dentistry for the first eight years in real estate because I loved my patients, but my lower back pain got too bad to continue doing both. My passion throughout the years has been doing mission work in Central America, namely Honduras and Nicaragua. My focus these days is helping people with their home buying and selling needs. Start to finish and forever after, I want to be their point of contact for everything related to real estate.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I’m a calculated risk taker. If there is a reasonable likelihood that I will succeed, then I’m likely to give it a try. I think about things for a long time and am not one to jump into anything new without considering all of the angles first. I prefer stability over risk.
