Meet Justin and Matthew Roth of Rothco Tree Service in Montgomery County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin and Matthew Roth.

Matt worked for a big tree company in the Woodlands during high school and he didn’t agree with many aspects of how the company was run, in particular, their quality of services. So he decided to start his own company. The first year he literally went door to door looking for work. In that first year, they got one job every couple of weeks and the income from year 1 amounted to less than a part-time job’s wages. In fact, most of the clients had been family or friends of the family. Justin (Matthew’s brother) finished his college degree and came on board to take on sales and other operations while Matt taught him the ins and the outs of the industry from his years of experience.

Little by little, they started taking on more jobs and even getting a few contracts with the local municipalities and homeowners associations. Over the past 7 years, with a focus on safety and client satisfaction with real honest recommendations for their clients’ trees, they have steadily grown to become one of the top 3 companies in Montgomery County.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Financing was always a problem because we were so young when we started. Our cycle went: work, save up money, spend it all. repeat. No one would loan us anything to buy equipment or logos for our trucks and we operate with lots of machinery, so we just kept up until we had some equity and a few more years under our belt. It took a lot of time to do this and it’s nice to see it paying off.

The tree service business is also a competitive industry, so we have competitors that have been at it for 30+ years. We care a great deal about what we do though, and I think that is one thing that has stood out to our clients.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Rothco Tree Service – what should we know?
We are a tree service company that focuses on tree health care, tree pruning, tree removals. If a tree can be saved, we would rather save it than cut it down. We also provide mulching and land clearing services.

We are known for our customer service, after-job clean up (we leave the yard looking nicer than when we arrived), and open/honest communication and recommendations. I think this is also what sets us apart from other tree services. We will email you a receipt of payment the same day, we don’t deal with subcontractors or do “fly by the night” work (we operate on schedule and our clients deserve prompt service).

We are most proud of our customer service and quality of work. We have one Angie’s List Super Service Awards every single year we’ve been in business. We also just won a “Best of the Woodlands 2017” award from Woodlands Online, which means a great deal as well.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
We are passionate about our work and we really appreciate our crew. I think the goal has always been to run a successful enough company so that everyone within it can just live a happy and comfortable life. Our crew is quite honestly the most hardworking and loyal crew on this side of town, and we have such a low turn over rate I think just due to the fact that they are a pretty tight team unit.

Everyone looks forward to getting to climb into trees every day. Our success in large part is due to our crew being so eager and passionate and we really just try to reward them and ourselves for keeping the company growing each year.
