Community Highlights: Meet Sherry Zhang

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sherry Zhang.

Hi Sherry, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in an Asian American immigrant household where mental health was not talked about or taken seriously. Culturally, mental health was often seen as taboo. There has been a lack of access to Asian American mental health providers over the years. I immigrated to this country at a young age with my family to southern California. Upon graduation from high school, I joined the Marine Corps. During my time as a Marine, I witnessed the lack of quality health care for our service members. These are my friends and colleagues who I care about very much, so I began to look for ways to advocate and provide support. After my time in the Marines, I decided to go to college to become a social worker so I can continue to advocate and support vulnerable populations. I graduated from University of Southern California.  I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who provides psychotherapy. I worked in community health care serving vulnerable populations with complex diagnosis. I started to shift into private practice in 2020 and is now in private practice full time. Advocacy and psychoeducation is a huge part of what I do. I want individuals to receive quality care for their health.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
There definitely has been challenges along the way. My father’s brain cancer worsened and he passed in 2018, after that my mom’s health began to decline; therefore, I became the caregiver for my mom. I refer to it as the sandwich generation because I am trying to care for an elderly along with my children. I am the peanut butter and jelly. I am fortunate to have my husband and close friends supporting me in this journey.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Changing Tides-therapy for wellness, healing, and life?
I am a woman, veteran, and minority-owned small business. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of Texas and Oklahoma. I provide psychotherapy for individuals from all walks of life. I have a passion for serving the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, veterans, adolescents and young adults, and the geriatric population. I take pride in advocating for adequate healthcare for women and I am certified in perinatal mental health. I continue to educate individuals about mental health care to break to stigma, especially within my own community.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I have always enjoyed watching sports, but that’s about it because I am terrible at playing it. My friends have always told me I am funny and I think that’s pretty true.  I grew up in Southern California, so go Dodgers!
