Meet Elvia Taylor of Crossing Borders Preschool in Rice Village

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elvia Taylor.

Elvia Taylor has been involved in language education since 1984 as a teacher, consultant, advocate, entrepreneur, and mom.

In 2001, Elvia was working in corporate America when she recognized there were people wanting to learn English or Spanish. Elvia spoke both languages perfectly and, so she decided to start her own business. She opened her home to students every evening using her dining room table and converting a guest bedroom into a classroom. Elvia’s language business took off!

In 2006, Elvia was able to open Crossing Borders Preschool, a language immersion school that offers children ages 18 – months – 5 years old academic programs in 4 different languages: English, Spanish, Mandarin, and French.

Today, Crossing Borders Preschool is one of the leading immersion schools in the Houston area. It offers winter, spring break, and summer camps that give children ages 4 – 12 years old the opportunity to be immersed in a different language whilst enjoying a fun curriculum!

Has it been a smooth road?
I had many challenges and obstacles finding the correct place to have our preschool. Location is one of the most crucial ingredients in founding your business. Another challenge was finding the correct partner to have in my business because you never really know who is actually serious about starting a business and staying until it flourishes. Another big lesson was going into a partnership. Sometimes, people want to change who you are, they learn from you and then leave you high and dry, or just want money and aren’t patient enough to understand the process for successful results. Businesses take longer than some projection models say.

Another challenge was hiring and training the correct people to work with. While that process was a challenge of its own, keeping my staff happy with their job was another challenge. Today, our turn-over rate has significantly lowered and our staff is happier. We are always trying to find great benefits to give them so that the work environment is a healthy and prosperous one.

The result of all the obstacles and challenges is that my husband and I are the sole owners of our business and have had incredible success. over the years.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Crossing Borders Preschool – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What I like best about Houston is how much diversity is in the city. Everywhere you go, you see so many different cultures and you hear so many different languages. This is truly a magical city and our students, teachers, and staff truly show how special this city is.
