Hi Derrick, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Back in August of 2016, after being so frustrated with an employer that did not recognize me for my creative thinking, I finally gathered the confidence to record WhyNotSports podcast. I talk about the good, bad & ugly of sports & how it impacts your everyday life! After years of feeling like there was more to give, I knew my success as a student athlete, multi-unit manager & being a family man would resonate with a few people! Little did I know, the podcast was becoming an inspiration to many & even was mentoring people depending on where they were in their life. Today, after millions of downloads, a plethora of magazine articles, hundreds of guests and numerous awards, the brand is continuing to grow beyond what I could measure! To still get recognized as an independent content creator and build the trust of your audience is something I am truly grateful & do not take for granted!
People asked me, “After 6 years, what keeps you going”? My reply to that is, “My supporters & audience letting me know how much my podcast has changed their outlook on life” & “by not letting God down on this God-given ability, he has given me with my voice & my platform!”
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
A smooth ride, what’s that?!? Anything worth having is worth fighting for! There were times I was told I was not professional enough, not a big enough platform & you must go to school in this field to be successful!
Anyone that knows me knows I am the ultimate competitor, the more you doubt me, the more I focus on overcoming the challenge by putting a D. Murph spin on it!
Researching some of the top motivational speakers like Dr. Eric Thomas, researching some of the top sports podcasts like Jalen & Jacoby & using Youtube University to help me produce & master my content has elevated me to become a recognizable name is this sports media space!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am an athlete turned family man, and content creator speaker who wants to create a platform where people can feel about being on with a message that has something that you can be inspired about!
I wouldn’t say a specialty or even specialize in much, I just focus on delivering positive content for the masses! I am most proud of the fact, I have my audience & listeners continue to rock with me over 6 years later. That’s a long time to be supporting someone who you didn’t know initially. Clearly, I have done something to bring the listener back :)!
The biggest thing I believe sets me apart from others is my humility, if you really check my resume; I have collaborated with some of the top entertainers & celebrities in their respective fields & also can collaborate with someone starting off in entrepreneurship & never lose touch of who I am regardless of their social status!
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Driven: I am driven to be the best. When I get told no, when doors shut on me or receive negative comments, I prove to myself & my supporters that I am STRONG enough to drive this brand to new heights!
