Rising Stars: Meet Yesenia Vasquez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yesenia Vasquez.

Hi Yesenia, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was going through a major life change when I decided to go to study in the esthetics program in college. I wanted to do something I could enjoy and be creative with. During spring break of 2020, we were told not to come back due to the pandemic. It was discoura, but we were able to complete our courses even though we didn’t get to have an actual graduation. I began working on film and music video sets later that year and haven’t stopped since. Through networking and meeting new people, I’ve been able to gradually increase my business.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Things have not been easy by any means, but I have a great support system so that helps immensely. There are times I can be pessimistic, but I always have someone cheering me on. Being a makeup artist requires you to be proactive in order to be successful. Freelancing in general requires you to put yourself out there and network so that you can build your clientele. I also have been given the advice to gain experience in various fields. I have worked on short film sets, music video shoots, and corporate settings. This has given me the experience to work with people of different backgrounds.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m an esthetician that specializes in makeup for film/video. Going to school has given me the education to be a professional makeup artist that is knowledgeable about skin. I have worked in different settings, which allows me to be flexible in this business. I pride myself in empathizing with others which allows me to make my clients comfortable. I love being creative and am always willing to try new things.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
The art of makeup has been around since ancient times. It has changed so much even over the last hundred years. I think the demand for clean/vegan beauty products will only rise and that may require artists to be familiar with that to meet their clients’ needs.
