Today we’d like to introduce you to Ian Hodgson.
Ian, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
MacMillan Studio started as an outlet for my artistic drive. My 9 to 5 was very analytical, and I had this artistic side that was not getting exercised. After I got started, some friends were talking about needing marketing media for their small businesses, but the quotes they were getting were just too high. So I started offering my services, and the business just grew from there. MacMillan Studio is very much focused on providing affordable multimedia content mostly geared toward small businesses and individuals.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In some ways, the business has been very organic in growth. Most of our clients are word-of-mouth referrals. That said, growth has been slower than we would like. But I thrive on challenges so I’m still adapting and overcoming them. One of the biggest challenges is just learning the skills required to accomplish some jobs. Often to save my clients money, instead of sub-contracting someone for a job, I will go and learn the required skills myself.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
MacMillan Studio is really growing out of my own artistic desires. I love getting into the artistic aspects of my client’s media. From writing or finding the best background music, to selecting the perfect font style, size, and color. No detail is too small in a project to be important to the complete artistic package. At times I over-obsess the tiniest details. For example, I was working on a webpage for a client, and one of the menu images was just not sharp enough for me. I spent hours (uncharged) just trying to make the image as clear as it was when it was created. My perfectionism, at times, drives me to go above and beyond the requirements of the client.
Any big plans?
The future of MacMillan Studio is still developing. The more projects we do, the more skills I learn, and the more inspiration that comes, the greater the offerings of MacMillan Studio to our clients. Today it’s videos, commercials, websites, social media administration, flyers, and forms. What tomorrow will bring? I’m not sure what my next inspiration will be.
