Inspiring Conversations with Nikki Hunter-Greenaway of Nurse Nikki

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nikki Hunter-Greenaway.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started my maternal health practice 10 years ago as a form of therapy for postpartum depression. I had just given birth to my first child. Days after his birth, he became septic and required a long hospital stay. As he recovered, I sunk into depression. My breast milk was drying up and I popped multiple stitches. I felt like someone should’ve been checking on me but everyone was more concerned for the baby. My older brother challenged me to be the change I wanted to see. I started Bloom Maternal Health. Bloom is my therapy. Bloom provides pregnancy support and postpartum care for families in New Orleans and now Houston. Last summer, my family was relocated to Katy so I decided to expand my practice to West Houston and Katy. Our goal is decrease maternal morbidities and mortalities by helping families thrive and BLOOM.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. Expanding to a new state has been very challenging as my nurse practitioner license is handled differently here. The state of women’s health care is very different since I started years ago. I feel very restricted in some regards.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am Nurse Nikki. I am a family nurse practitioner and lactation consultant certified in perinatal mental health. I am the founder and owner of Nurse Nikki which is the umbrella group for a collection of women’s health programs. Bloom Maternal Health is our perinatal clinic where we provide pregnancy support and education, and postpartum health care. We also provide a maternal health corporate wellness program called Bloom @ Work.

Bloom Community Health provides perinatal support to unhoused and under-resourced families for free through generous donations. Bloom Period Project is an initiative to address period poverty through the distribution of hygiene products to schools and shelters.

I am most proud of my ability to see a problem in community women’s health and create a solution to solve it. I think what sets me apart is I’m a creative and progressive thinker with a compassionate heart that possesses a healthy portion of hustle. I feel this is my key to sustainability.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
We can join all of the master classes. We can sign up for all of the trainings. We can buy all of the Canva bundles.

But if we don’t press send, submit or start on anything, our passion will only live in our minds instead of growing in our community. Just do it. My community is waiting on me to show up. If not me, then who?
