Community Highlights: Meet Marcus Muhd of A Tone Productions

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcus Muhd.

Hi Marcus, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was excited about Hip Hop/Rap music in its early inception. I became fascinated by the culture of it and soon started tinkering with writing lyrics just to see what it would be like to recite my own songs. By middle school, I entered the school talent show, and by high school, I was creating my own beats and forming a group called C.A.P., then changing the name and having a professional album release in the year 1992. I won’t mention the name of the group because it will only bring more benefit to the many bootleggers out there today feeding themselves off our work. Soon after the album release, we were offered recording deals by Epic Records, Capitol Records, and other labels, but the local label contract prevented the group from proceeding, and everyone essentially went their separate ways. Shortly after, myself and another group member joined with the group Ruckus, and the group Redrum was formed. Back in California pursuing a recording deal lead, Redrum was considered too rough after receiving a deal memo from Warner Brothers on a 5 song EP and delivering 7. Years and several solo underground works later, I decided the best direction for me to go would be in the movie soundtrack market, and that the best way to start would be to produce movies. Currently, I’m concentrating on writing, producing, directing and editing feature films, and everything necessary in between, including the marketing, promotions, advertising, and merchandising of each film.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I literally do not know what a smooth road is. If I ever saw one, I probably wouldn’t trust it enough to travel on it right off. I know they exist because I have eyes and see some people rolling on them all the time. Everything has been a struggle and I’m only surprised if something goes the way I intend. Usually, I have to apply some kind of extra force, creativity, time, resource, or skill to get it done, or just scrap the idea if the value of the idea doesn’t level up to the effort. It is what it is and I learn from the good and the bad and keep it moving.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about A Tone Productions?
My focus right now is producing the best original, high-quality films with great content as independently as possible, and following those films up with great soundtrack releases. To make a long answer short, I would ask people to please visit my website, ATonePro.com. There they can check out a lot of what I offer from my years of experience working for myself and many others. I’m most proud of being self-sufficient in all aspects of production and publishing, and being able to collaborate with other entrepreneurs and creators, which I enjoy doing.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I think people would be surprised to know that I was once a full-on rapper. In fact, people are always surprised when I tell them, and then it still takes some convincing. It’s funny, I can play them my music and they still doubt it’s me on the track.
