Conversations with David Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Johnson.

Hi David, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
In Indianapolis, Indiana, I first began this profession by offering assistance to neighborhood associations and community-based organizations. We held workshops for the local leaders and offered back-office support to their organizations. We rapidly discovered that while many people wanted to assist the community, they lacked the necessary skills or experience. Growth was also hindered by a lack of resources and mentorship. With just a few workshops, we were able to start drawing in nonprofit clients from the neighborhood associations, and soon after, clients from businesses. We went online thanks to Covid, and now we provide services to businesses and nonprofits in 15 states and 14 different countries. Texas, having fewer covid restrictions and better tax laws made it an easy decision to relocate and settle in this great state. In the past, we have only provided the sponsored Equal Opportunity Program, which offers a predetermined curriculum to companies and charitable organizations with yearly revenues under $100,000. Since moving to Houston, we have launched our membership program, which includes additional benefits including walk-along, daily, and weekly consulting services. This membership offers a ton of advantages, daily support, training, and workshops, all at a price that is significantly less than the market rate. This new chapter of Spring Oath’s history has been pivotal in the fulfillment of our mission.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We struggled for a while to persuade people that consulting services ought to be made affordable or even free. The consulting industry is challenging and fiercely competitive. In many respects, bringing up the idea that the service should be free undercuts the market. From our vantage point, we watch as our friends and coworkers waste their meager resources on unreliable, unskilled, and novice business coaches and consultants. Charging them a fortune for services that produce no results, which simply serves to demoralize and exhaust new business owners. We offer thorough walk-along services that not only address the immediate problem but also identify and address all potential underlying causes. However, our local board of directors is a more recent source of conflict. For our local chapter in Houston, we still need to expand our board of directors. It would be preferable to establish some strategic alliances as we are new to this city.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
The Mariott hotel here in Houston would be our most notable customer. We assessed, planned, implemented, and optimized a bistro department, increasing its monthly revenue by 21.3% in 3 months. My proudest moment, though, came when a colleague of mine, Bill Brinson, was given the chance to serve as the Interim CEO of the Starfish Initiative in Indianapolis, Indiana. He hired me to work with him to upgrade the department. Being a part of the expansion of such a famous institution at the time as a younger man was exhilarating. I think that having a degree in philanthropic studies, which focuses on creative strategies for nonprofit or philanthropic leaders, gave me the advantage I needed to succeed in the position.

My favorite client when I consider our start-up clientele is Ms. Regina Thompson. Together, we created her nonprofit organization, Mono-Touch. The charity focuses on PTSD, pain management, and sickle cell disease. She has now established connections with nearby hospitals, which have chosen to support her effort financially. A moment to be proud of.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I’ve had the good fortune in my life to endure numerous family-related personal hardships. The idea of reviving a struggling nonprofit or dormant business offered me hope after having to endure suffering from sick relatives, harsh parents, and tragic circumstances. Covid was an unnoticed gift. We were able to serve a lot more individuals worldwide as a result of being forced to go online, which played a crucial role in our success. Covid was helpful in a strange way. That is definitely luck, in my opinion. I think it also demonstrates our team’s capacity for flexibility and turning lemons into lemonade.
