Today we’d like to introduce you to Bryan Smart.
Hi Bryan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always had a passion for leadership and an entrepreneurial spirit. Looking back, there are many elements of my life and experience that have brought me to where I am today. I grew up watching my father cut lawns on the side for extra money, which planted the seeds of hard work, responsibility, and entrepreneurship early for me. I started my first three businesses at age 14. I didn’t realize it at the time, but the end game was about building a dream and generational wealth for myself and my family and creating opportunities for others in the community.
I’m a third-generation HBCU Alum and served as Executive President of the Student Association and President of the College of Arts and Science Student Council at Howard University. In that role, I had the distinguished honor of introducing US President Barack Obama at a White House signing ceremony for an executive order to strengthen historically black colleges and universities. President Obama signed a photo for me with “Dream Big Dreams Bryan”, and it really resonated with me.
After graduation, I spent five years in public service as a Deputy Chief of Staff, Director of Community Affairs, and even ran for City Council, for the City of Houston where I aided and implemented the first Houston Appreciation Week and initiated the Hire Houston Youth Program.
In 2014, I took a leap of faith and launched SmartScaping Landscaping & Design, with $4,000, two lawnmowers, a pickup truck, and a dream of successful business ownership and independence for myself and my parents. Today, I am the founder and CEO SmartScaping and our family business now provides maintenance and beautification services to over 80 commercial properties throughout Southeast Texas and charitable initiatives to uplift the community.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There have been challenges all along the way, but the way I overcome them is through faith and hard work. Being a Black-owned business comes with its own challenges. I created a business in an industry where most people don’t look like me to provide opportunities and a place where like-minded folks who are willing to work hard can fit in, build a career in a non-traditional industry, and even go on to launch their own businesses. The key is to never give up. The distance between living the dream and where you are right now, is a matter of time, hard work, and determination.
