Inspiring Conversations with Rebecca Morrison of Skin Deep Medspa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Morrison.

Hi Rebecca, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
After being laid off from a project management job, I was unsure of what my next move was going to be. I had no formal degree. I applied and was selected for an internship at the prestigious Scott & White Hospital in Temple, Texas. I received my certification in Cosmetic Lasers and Paramedical Aesthetics through the Scott & White Plastic Surgery and Dermatology Department. It was then I began to specialize in treating a variety of skin conditions and shade ranges. In 2005 I earned my Laser Specialist License at Rocky Mountain Laser College in Colorado. Upon moving to The Woodlands, Texas, I wasn’t able to get a job with an already established Medspa. As a curvy Latina, I didn’t fit the “aesthetic”. It was then, I noticed there wasn’t diversity and inclusivity in the local medspa industry. I opened Skin Deep Medspa in 2006. Skin Deep Medspa is a place where everyone is welcome. Throughout all of the years, I owe immense gratitude to the LGBTQ+ community. These folks have supported me and helped me grow and live my dream. For that, I will be forever grateful.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has definitely not been smooth. In the beginning, I wasn’t cost-conscious. I spent money on things that, at the time, weren’t beneficial to the big picture. I ruined my credit and wasted so much money. There were a lot of sleepless nights. I just kept at it. Honestly, I had nothing else. My business was going to succeed no matter what. I had an unstoppable determination and perseverance. There were a few people along the way that poured into my cup so to speak. Without them, I know for sure I would not be here today.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I was the first Medspa in The Woodlands that catered to all skin shades. What sets me apart from everyone else is, Skin Deep services are accessible and affordable. I specialize in treating darker skin tones. I am most proud of my longevity in the business. It’s not easy to own a business and still be successful. Skin Deep is 16 years strong in the same location. It truly is a blessing to be able to make a comfortable living doing what I love. I offer the latest advances in laser hair removal and customized peels at budget-friendly prices.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
What has worked well for me is CONSISTENCY. It seems like a simple concept. However, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve referred clients to other businesses for treatments I don’t offer; and they don’t call them back, or their pricing is not clear. I have had clients tell me they have shown up to scheduled appointments and the business no shows or reschedules them. Time is the most precious non-renewable resource that we have on earth. I am grateful for the clients that make time in their schedule to allow me to treat them. I show up on time, and I expect the same from my clients. Obviously, things can happen that can be out of our control. I truly believe clear communication and customer care can take any business to the next level.
