Inspiring Conversations with Myrecia Donaldson of MD Legal Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Myrecia Donaldson.

Myrecia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I grew up in South Houston, more specifically in the South Park area. Being a lawyer wasn’t my goal because I was 100% sure I wanted to be an FBI agent. I graduated from high school and went off to Stephen F. Austin State University where I completed my bachelor’s in science with an emphasis in law enforcement. Before graduating, I secured a job with Child Protective Services as a family-based caseworker. I did that for about 5 months before I knew that I was either switching jobs or going back to school, because I couldn’t see myself doing that job as my lifelong career. While in college, one of my professors asked if I had ever considered law school and I reminded her that I was going to be an FBI agent. Well, that thought popped back up when figuring out my next move so I decided to take the LSAT just to see what it was like. A friend then encouraged me to apply to law school so I did. A few months passed and I had sort of forgotten about it. I was sitting at work and I got a phone call from Thurgood Marshall School of Law extending an offer to attend. At that point, I was super excited because it was really unexpected! I put in my two weeks and started school the following week. I finished my J.D. in 2019, took the bar, did a few contract jobs and then started my own firm in 2020.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
At this point in life, I don’t know if smooth roads actually exist. While in law school, I worked two jobs pretty much the entire time until 2 weeks before the bar. After the bar, I worked in a few contract positions and I actually had two very consistent positions, then 5 months later the pandemic hit, I lost both of those within a month. I was unemployed for a while. I got down to applying to retail positions and nothing was coming through, so I took the leap to open my own firm and here we are!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about MD Legal Group?
My practice is split between criminal defense, parole, and personal injury. Our main area is criminal defense but we are actively expanding our other areas. We pride ourselves in being able to provide competent representation to individuals who otherwise could not afford it. What sets us apart from everyone else is our ability to provide genuine representation without judgment regardless of the situation. It’s really a superpower, lol. I love that people trust me with their freedom and it’s not something that I take for granted and I think it’s important for my clients and potential clients who may be reading to know that.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Absolutely! As tragic as the Covid Crisis was, it was a blessing in disguise and I now have a different outlook on life. It taught me that life is too short to put time and energy into things that do not align with my goals, but most importantly it taught me the importance of not letting fear keep me from betting on myself.
