Today we’d like to introduce you to Comfort Abiodun.
Hi Comfort Abiodun, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My interest in film sparked during my childhood, but it wasn’t until high school that I began experimenting with filmmaking both in and out of school. After being selected to direct my class film, I decided I wanted to pursue it on a larger scale, so that’s what I did.
The concept ‘Eye of the Beholder’ was created by Hanna Grohmann, who is the creative director and stylist for the Reverie shoot. This represents my ongoing journey as a filmmaker and director, and how one’s art serves as a direct reflection of their passions, culture, and values. This paired with the idea of Reverie, a state of being pleasantly lost in one’s thoughts; a daydream represents my motivations as a filmmaker.
The shoot was entirely photographed by the wonderful Tola Olawale, on both film & digital.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Just as in any other career, filmmaking has its challenges and it is often not easy. However, it’s how you choose to capture each moment that makes all the difference.
When developing this shoot, Hanna had a clear vision and handled everything from the conceptualization to the style curation. We wanted to experiment with the idea of films captured through a director’s lens.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
While earning my degree in Media Production & Anthropology from the University of Houston, I’ve gotten to collaborate with countless talented filmmakers and have been blessed enough to be selected for notable opportunities such as The Academy’s Guest of Gold Rising program for 2022. I have now written, directed, and produced her debut short film,’This is Real Life’, which was selected to premiere at the Los Angeles Moving Parts Film Festival in 2021. I continue to pursue this passion for storytelling as I work on the development of bigger and better projects.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My advice to anyone stepping into the creative industry is to simply create, whether it turns out good or bad. Trial & error is the best way to learn.
