Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Hazel.
Hi Sarah, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Having had no previous experience or training, I started painting in late 2004. I have had extensive exhibition experience since then, being juried into exhibits by notable figures in the art world including MFAH curator Alison de Lima Greene, art collector Lester Marks, the late Bert Long and others. I’ve won several awards for my work throughout the years.
I spent my formative years in Mississippi, but attended high school and college in Hawaii. Met and married my husband, the Amazing Reese in Aspen, Colorado, and we briefly lived in southern California before moving back to my husband’s hometown of Houston. Our family, which includes four daughters, has lived in Houston since 1984 in the East End, the Third Ward, and most recently the Rice U/Med Center area.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My biggest struggle has been an almost five-year hiatus from painting as I have dealt with breast cancer and the mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional mess that accompanies such a diagnosis.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Subject matter for my paintings is propelled by my personal belief that common moments are beautiful and worth capturing in a two-dimensional format. There is a realistic quality to my work, but it is more about a moment, rather than getting bogged down in details. Because my eyesight is bad, my work is slightly messy. Even so, the general impression is one of tranquility. I call my style “fuzzy realism”.
I love painting figurative work and portraits and prefer working in oils on linen.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck is for amateurs. Many, many hours of hard work have been put into developing my artistic vision and skill.
