Today we’d like to introduce you to CaSandra Cantue.
CaSandra, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My passion for makeup artistry began during my reign as Miss Texas Southern University. Preparing for events, I would apply my own makeup due to time restrictions and as an outlet for stress relief. My passion for makeup progressed drastically over my tenure as Queen. During the year, I would also assist my Royal Court and peers in student leadership. As the year came to an end, my life paused when my Mother fell ill. The dreams of going into a forensic science internship crumbled with the reality of me returning back home to Beaumont, TX. Of course, you have to get a job! I attempted many career paths, but all came to a dead end. I realized I had to focus on my passion at the time to ground myself in a world of calamity (Hurricane Harvey). I left my retail position to go on call for MAC Cosmetics and the rest is history. I worked my way into an hourly position, until I was able to transition back to Houston, Texas to establish a professional career in my field of study. Once settled, I requested a transfer and began working at the Macy’s Pearland MAC counter, which created an opportunity at Macy’s Baybrook. When the world stopped during the pandemic, business stopped. I contemplated how I could make an impact in the makeup industry and maintain my business. Through prayer, guidance, and push from family and close friends, HerCanvas x Cantue- Beauty Blenders came into fruition. Struggling with hyperpigmentation, I wanted to develop a product that would assist with makeup application while maintaining skin health. Through pop-up shops, clientele services, and online sales; HerCanvas x Cantue has flourished beyond my wildest dream. I have been able to build clientele by way of my repour at local counters and partnerships in the artist community.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. What began as a passion became a business opportunity. I transitioned to the MAC after a failed attempt to move back to Houston, TX. A year later, I was able to work in my profession in the city while picking up shifts after hours at a local counter to maintain my skill set. Working a 9-5, I spent countless late nights strategizing and planning for the next phase of Her Canvas x Cantue. During the pandemic, we all had to restructure to reality of the world we have now normalized. I am beyond thankful that I am here thriving a year later.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a Contract Specialist in legal for Aegion- Corrpro Companies, Inc. I review and negotiate agreements for cathodic protection in oil, water, and gas corporations along the east coast. I am most proud of my entry into the field. I met my then-manager during an application at a MAC counter and entered the field as a Contract Administrator in the telecommunications industry providing services on military bases in the Middle East and countless International territories. As with the opportunity presented at random, I am willing to learn and grow into a role. I don’t believe in declining an opportunity due to “preparedness”. The path is laid for you if you are willing to step out on faith.
What are your plans for the future?
I look forward to developing HerCanvas x Cantue into a kit with various application tools. I plan and pray for the chance to be on the shelf of major retailers. In artistry, I am looking forward to collaborations for fashion, production, and major events around the city.
