Daily Inspiration: Meet Valencia Arline

Today we’d like to introduce you to Valencia Arline.

Hi Valencia, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have always loved art and being creative. I got my BFA in Drawing and Painting in 2020. The timing of everything going on in 2020 allowed me to explore and experiment with my art. In the past couple of years, I explored lino printing and digital art, and recently I have been exploring fiber art and yarn crafts.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have been very fortunate in the past with my artistic journey. However, I do tend to be my own biggest obstacle. In the past, I have always been my worst critic, which has kept me from trying new things, finishing projects, and sharing my work. However, allowing myself to try new things and make work, good or bad, just for the sake of trying has been transformative in how I view my art.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
The majority of my work in the past has been drawing in pen and ink and painting in oil and acrylic. However, 2022 has been a transformative year for me and my art. I picked up an interest in fiber art and have been playing around with embroidery, lace, and yarn projects. I still draw and paint often but, this year I have really enjoyed the challenge of learning and experimenting with fiber art. I believe my variety of artistic skills and knowledge helps my work stand out and never get too boring. For example, one week, I may make my own paper for a lino print, and the next, I might crochet fake flowers and do some digital sketches. The ability to jump around to a variety of mediums and projects has really helped my artistic process and with art block.

Any big plans?
I have some unfinished lace and embroidery pieces that I am really excited to complete and show off. I also began a craft business called Clouds Crafts Co; I sell some of my handmade yarn crafts and home decor that I make in my free time. I recently started selling at local craft markets in Houston and Austin and the experience has been really rewarding to meet with other artists and makers. I really love where I am at in my artistic journey and the plan is to just keep going in the direction I am headed.
