Rising Stars: Meet David Craig

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Craig.

Hi David, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I studied classical guitar for a couple of years, around the age 9 or 10. I eventually got a bass guitar and began studying on my own. I found a teacher named Erich Avinger and he got my jazz skills up to audition for HSPVA (The High School for the Performing and Visual Arts). This introduced me to a big world of jazz and other music. I was to have profound musical experiences and develop relationships that would last a lifetime. I became a working musician here in Houston after high school. I’ve been in many different kinds of bands over the years. Played with many legendary musicians in jazz and other genres. I write, record and perform original music of my own and of others. The question of how I got to where I am is one gig after the other.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’m hindsight I’d have to say, most of the struggles were on me. I had to learn lessons. Simple things like being prepared. Most of my struggles were self-imposed. As far as the “business”of music and “success” there are challenges but for me it’s a thing of, if I take care of the music, the music takes care of me.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I play the acoustic, upright bass, and bass guitar. I perform and compose music. I play live and I record. I am most proud of the music I make with my own group(s) and my collaborations in other peoples groups Check of The David’s Craig Quartet The Mystery on all streaming platforms. . I worked with Sebastian Whittaker on all of his albums except for the last one ( a live recording). I think one of the things that set me apart is my versatility. I play in many different genres.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I’m not interested in trends. People are concerned with being relevant, and creating content. I think most of it is bullshit. Just play music. It’s that basic.
