Life & Work with Charles (Traps) Robinson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Charles (Traps) Robinson.

Hi Traps, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey started in late 2013 early 2014 after my active duty service ended with the USMC. I served 4 years and did one combat tour to Afghanistan. When I returned back to civilian life I found myself lost and had no identity – I ended up being homeless for almost 2 years. I had to find my light during one of my darkest times. After abusing other outlets to hide my pain and run from what I wasn’t dealing with it led to suicidal thoughts and one thought almost became an attempt, but God had me covered as he has every day. I went back to what I know, and that was finding a way or making a way. I turned to fitness and started training every day and sometimes 2-3 times per day. It wasn’t easy in any way, but I eventually gathered enough strength to bet on myself. I officially started my business in 2015 with 0 clients. I was determined and hungry to build a legacy, one that would be remembered long after I’m gone. Before I knew it I had hundreds of clients and in my definition of success at that time I was successful. My purpose in life was more than just fitness, I’ve been blessed to compete on American Ninja Warrior, Ultimate Beastmaster (Netflix), and worked with some of the top brands in the world such as Red Bull, Nike, Champs, Men’s Health, MET-RX, 1st Phorm, Eastbay just to name a few. I have now been training for 11 years.

Fast forward to 2022 on a leap of faith I moved to Houston, TX to start a new life and that’s exactly what I did.

I currently play rugby for the high-performance pathway for the Houston Sabercats with hopes of playing for the USA Eagles.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My road has been everything, but smooth.

The hardest struggle was doing everything myself and not having help along the way, but I believe if there is no way, then you have to make your own way.

I never dealt with self-doubt or imposter syndrome because I always believed that wherever I was or any opportunity I was given I deserved it because I worked for it and was willing to sacrifice anything to get it and have a few times.

The hardest part sometimes would be not knowing where my next meal would come or where I would lay my head, but I never lost sight of the mountaintop.

I have arrived.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am currently employed by Life Time as a Coach and Personal Trainer/Certified Nutritionist.

I am known for an ELITE level of Performance Training that isn’t just for competitive athletes, but being able to take that same style of training and make it relatable for everyday life.

I’m most proud of MYSELF because I kept going when I had so many reasons to throw the towel in, but I wasn’t raised like that. I don’t quit when the going gets tough.

I believe what separates me from others is I don’t conform to what the world thinks or says I am unapologetically myself.

If I ever walk into a space that forces me to dim my light, I remove myself from that room immediately!

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
If you build it, they will come.
