Inspiring Conversations with Calipha and Hadiya Coleman of The Braid Labb

Today we’d like to introduce you to Calipha and Hadiya Coleman.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Our passion for hair started at a young age. Growing up as sisters, our mom taught us the skill of braiding at 9 and 11 years old. We enjoyed styling and practicing on each other’s hair until we perfected our skills. As our creativity was shown through our hairstyles, our family and friends requested us to style their hair as well. At that point, we knew we discovered our talent. Our dad always taught us to do for self and create our own stream of income. Therefore, we eventually started our business as “The Braid labb” back in 2020 and started gaining our clientele expeditiously. We fell in love with doing our clients’ hair. Our main goal is to make our clients feel the best version of themselves and boost their confidence, while sitting in our chair. We are beyond blessed to bring out the beauty of others.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Building a business takes time and effort. One of the toughest challenges in our business was balancing school and maintaining our clientele. Having to attend high school and cosmetology school from morning to evening was a big change. We couldn’t take as many clients as we used to. Another obstacle we faced was having to adjust during the pandemic. My sister and I had to be extra cautious. It was definitely difficult, but we had the passion and drive to persevere.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We are hairstylists who specialize in braids, twists, and locs. The Braid Labb is mainly known for knotless braids. Also, what sets us apart from others is that my sister and I work together to get our clients in and out.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
We would like to give credit to our mom for teaching us her braiding skills and being the best mentor to us. Secondly, we want to thank our dad for helping us start our own business, encouraging us to do for self, and to never depend on anyone. Also, we would like to appreciate our clients for always supporting and trusting us to be their hairstylists. Most importantly, we want to thank God, because we wouldn’t be here without him.
