Meet Melody Fraser of Blissful Waters Float Center in The Woodlands

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melody Fraser.

Melody, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
The stress of everyday life and living in a large city was taking its toll on me. It was summer time and my two kids were home. One had just learned how to talk, and has not stopped since. I felt like I could not have a free thought of my own and it was starting to show.

My husband sent me to Austin for a weekend away and a float. He had previously floated in Australia and thought it would help bring me back. It did! I loved it so much I made floating a habit. Not only did floating help me with clearing my mind and having my own thoughts but I was truly happier and looked at life differently. I wanted to become a regular floater but found the only float center in Houston to be too far for me.

I soon started looking at how I could bring this idea to my community if this helped me so much I imagined what it would do for others. I brought the idea to my husband and we researched the benefits of floating and the business case of establishing our own float center.

After a lot of research and utilizing resources like the Lift Off Houston Program, we pooled our savings along with some money from the bank and started construction of our float center in The Woodlands. Construction is scheduled to be completed February 2018.

Has it been a smooth road?
We have encountered some unexpected obstacles that are unique to our type of business. As ours is an emerging industry, finding a real estate broker and landlord that has heard of floatation therapy let alone understands potential site requirements proved challenging. We had to do a lot of explaining….

We encountered the same issues when dealing with Architects and builders. Sound mitigation, additional plumbing and the installation of the float rooms themselves are not typical “commercial” projects. Our original opening was scheduled for September 2017 but we were forced to cancel our original builder’s contract.

We had to regroup, repeat the bidding cycle for construction and have now resumed construction.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Blissful Waters Float Center story. Tell us more about the business.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The market for Floatation Therapy is increasing both locally and nationally as awareness of the industry grows and people turn to drug-free alternatives for stress management and physical recovery. The medical research community has a growing body of published research that is strengthening the case for floatation therapy being accepted as a therapy option for practitioners within insurance networks.
