Daily Inspiration: Meet Krista Sharpe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Krista Sharpe.

Hi Krista, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always been a singer…since the age of three, I’ve been singing in my sleep. I’ve always wanted to make people smile and enjoy themselves at the moment. Originally started singing in the church choir, then sang in all my school choirs…I always knew that music was a huge part of me. My dad used to dj and my mom used to sing with all her family since she was little. After graduating high school, I went straight to college. I studied musical theatre but knew live music was where I wanted to be. So after graduating and circling the drain for two years, I moved to Conroe in 2018. I went to my first open mic at the corner pub in Conroe. At first, I didn’t think I was good enough to play some shows but slowly found some supportive friends and picked up a guitar. I’ve been in a few music projects since then. This past year I’ve made it my priority to fully take charge of my musical journey and challenge myself to be a full time musician. I want to share my music and light with my community. Hopefully, ignite a light in someone else to follow their passion.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’d say this road has had its moments of peace but frequently, it’s been quite bumpy. I feel it evening out as time goes along…I’m thankful. Often times my obstacles involve me having to prove myself to others to be respected as a musician. It’s no surprise women are treated differently in music but adding being plus-sized on top of it is a whole new world. I’ve had musicians come up to meet my bandmates prior to performing and be completely ignored. It wasn’t until after I performed that I was actually talked to and recognized.

One of my other struggles is understanding how to run a business and to be successful at it. This year has proven to me it is possible. I just can’t be afraid to ask for questions and help when I need it.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m out playing shows every weekend somewhere near you. I play live shows around Houston, The Woodlands and Conroe. Playing a mix of covers and originals. I’m known for my powerhouse vocals and control of voice. I also host a songwriter showcase and a musical theatre cabaret night. I’m most proud of myself for sticking to this way of life and career path. It’s not easy doing what I do. It may seem easy at times, but not everyone could do this and I’m grateful that I can. I think what sets me apart from others is my ability to be flexible in this field I love putting on a show, but I always want to make sure I’m adding to the experience for my audience…never taking anything away.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
If you want to meet new people/find a mentor, you gotta go out and support your local communities. The more you’re present in the scene, the better. You’re not going to get where you want to go without showing up.

Don’t be afraid to ask. Be honest and genuine, and be interested in connecting with others.
