Today we’d like to introduce you to Talisha Washington.
Hi Talisha, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I became pregnant at 16 years old in the 10th grade. I had no job or money but I knew that I wanted my child and that something had to be done to make this child happy. I always used to play in my little sister’s hair almost every day & I knew it was something I really liked so I took a leap of faith & started taking clients. It went easier than expected & I was blown away that clients started booking left and right. I literally started working my first job at McDonald’s and when I got off I went home to do hair. Two weeks after having my daughter, I was in hustle mode. At 2 weeks postpartum I had 2 jobs which were Sonics & Journeys plus doing hair whenever I had free time. Eventually, by the time she was 1 year old, I left both jobs because I realized the money was good but I needed more finances & also more time with my baby so I decided to apply for Alorica. I was also in Cosmetology school. Luckily, I got the job! I was so excited!! After graduating college & working for about 2 months at Alorica I realized that wasn’t good enough either. I used to go on lunch break, then come home, do hair, and make an excuse to not go back to work. I also started selling hair extensions too, one day my manager asked “Where do you be on your lunch break?”. I was honest and replied, “I’m not going to lie, I do hair on the side.” So she said, “Why don’t you make that your full time job?” & since then, I’ve been working full time doing hair & selling hair. My business got so big I outgrew home. I decided to open my own hair salon & add stylist with not much clientele so that I could help them build their business like I did for my own. Then my hair business outgrew the hair salon & this year 2022, I decided to separate the two. I am now 24 years old, a wife & mother of 4 kids with a 7 figure hair business & a full hair salon.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
This journey has definitely not been smooth. There have been a lot of bumps in the road such as finding the right vendors to supply the best of the best for my customers. Also, learning not to mix business & friendships. That was the hardest thing getting too comfortable. I’ve been ran over a lot by people. People have tried their hardest to tarnish my name but at the end of it all, God has continuously blessed me & is continuing to bless me. When it came to my daughter the support from my family, husband well boyfriend at the time, and his family was amazing. I never had to worry about babysitters or support because they truly believed in me and had my back 100%.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
