Today we’d like to introduce you to Abiram Martinez.
Hi Abiram, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I first got started in the makeup industry my junior year in high school. During that time era of my life, I was going through a lot emotionally and mentally. Wanting to change a lot of things about myself but couldn’t because being raised in such a strict religious family I was just simply not confident enough. I got to meet a lot of friends at one point that year and noticed how many girls enjoyed getting themselves ready by making sure the makeup always looked good but also made them feel good about themselves. I took a lot of time in my room alone watching YouTube makeup videos and just practicing on myself. Senior year my dad passed away and I took that time to really find myself in a very dark place, makeup always seemed to distract me from a lot of negative thoughts but I pushed through. Soon as I graduated, I started to indulge in the essence of beauty from within and without. Started to accept myself for who I was and who I could be. I then went on to work at my first job with Lancôme cosmetics at a Macy’s counter and then went on to Sephora where I was soon noticed by a manager from a prestigious salon who then offered me a job. I’ve grown a lot ever since then and now I am here an independent artist who makes sure I express myself with others through my passion for artistry.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t think anything you do in life is a smooth road, you always overcome obstacles in your life that may want to make your believe you’re not good enough for something you were destined to be. Some of my struggles were always wanting to fit in with the wrong crowd and that always made me overlook myself and my happiness. It was a process to understand that being happy comes from accepting yourself and loving yourself. Being a part of the makeup community really helped me feel included. Another challenge for me was always comparing my artistry to someone that was far more experienced than I was. Always wanted to overly critique my work and thought it wasn’t good enough. Now I understand that everyone has a different perspective on what makeup not only should be or look like but also how it should make you feel at that moment.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I’ve had to turn a lot of bad luck into good luck by manifesting the life I wanted. I believe bad luck comes from the mindset you carry. I also understand that the bad luck moments give you the best lessons we require to move forward. I’ve had my fair share of bad luck in both my life and business simply because I wasn’t loving myself and taking control of it. Took me some time to be disciplined enough to believe in what I deserved. I’ve had a lot of open doors and good luck ever since I took control of my life with love, kindness and the understanding of being patient with myself and with the ones I love.
