Today we’d like to introduce you to Corisandra Lopez.
Hi Corisandra, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
It was 2014, I was 18 years old, fresh out of high school, going to massage school and working a full-time job. I had no idea how my life was going to change. I found out I was pregnant in the fall of 2014. I was lost, depressed, and very scared. Scared of what people would think, scared of how my preacher grandfather and strict grandmother would take the news, and most importantly scared about bringing a new life into this world. I had no idea what to do, but music had always been a safe space for me growing up so I dove head first into my first “Cover” of “Wet Dreamz”. J.Cole has always been a very strong influence in my life and now music, so I found the courage to tell my truth through a rap I wrote about my pregnancy. So many people resonated with my words and my voice that I was flooded with tons of love and support. Ironically Music has always been very fluent in my life but certain genres were not allowed in my home. I was so happy with the feedback that I actually thought of a future in making music. I realized music is my passion! I came out in 2019 as one of the few Latina rappers coming out of Houston. I was booking shows, winning competitions, making music, and just getting out there in general. Then COVID hit and I feel many of us lost our footing when it came to the plans we had in place. I took time from the music industry and focused on myself and family, but I always knew I would be back! In May of 2021, I booked my first show back on the scene with ByBreezy aka Houstock Legendary and it was like I never missed a beat! The stage missed me and I missed it. It is safe to say I have been booked up and busy, city to city, since I’ve been back out. I dropped my first ever album “K.A.R.M.A” in January of 2022 and to this day I’ve almost reached over 30k streams. I am so grateful and blessed to have all this love and support, even after I took a break. It makes me want to go even harder! Harder so I can continue to put on for my hard-working women! Harder so I can show that no matter what walk of life you come from or what you look like, you can do whatever your heart desire! With consistency, hard work, and dedication you can’t lose! I was crowned Queen of The South at a competition I won and I do not take it lightly! Queens lead, and I am leading by example. Im breaking down barriers and generational curses to heal and change the world. One song at a time, one person at a time. It starts with you! My music speaks for itself so thank you so much for lending me your ear! I am not your typical rapper, I feed the soul! I am a woman, mother, daughter, granddaughter, and sister, but most importantly IAMLOPEZ.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have definitely been hiccups on the road but nothing that can stop my drive or determination. Balancing out work life/ family life and IAMLOPEZ is definitely a challenge but if the road was easy anybody could do it. I like that my journey hasn’t been smooth. I take the adversity and the victories with a great attitude because at the end of the day this is the life that I choose. You have to know what the lows feel like so you can appreciate the highs.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a true artist at heart. I write my own music, sing my own songs, perform my own shows and most importantly BOOK everything myself! I have a very different and authentic sound. I don’t think I sound like anyone else and I pride myself in that. I am also very proud of my artistic abilities. I’ve always been a drama queen so it came pretty naturally when I hit that stage for the first time. Everywhere I go I always hear the word “ENERGY”. I have a very captivating and enticing energy when I hit the stage, people love it! I’ve recently won a singing competition which has opened up so many doors as well. I was always a bit insecure about my singing voice but not anymore! I am blessed by the best and I am truly happy to be able to share my gifts with the world!
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I am definitely a risk taker. You gotta pay to play, and I am so used to working under pressure that when I decided on this career, I realized I’m pretty familiar with all the difficult emotions that come with it. I remember one time I was supposed to go to SXSW and all my plans fell through, But with a leap of faith and a couple of hundred dollars in my pocket I drove to Austin with some close friends and made it happen! I risked it and ended up with a great slot on 6th St. during SXSW. That was one of the first times I realized with good/pure intentions that the universe will open up a way for you!
