Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Martinez.
Hi Sarah, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I worked in the fitness industry for years before I realized I wanted to do more than just help people be fit. So, after I graduated with a bachelor’s in Exercise Science from the University of Georgia, I applied to physical therapy school. I graduated with my doctorate in 2012. Right after school, I started working in outpatient orthopedics with sports-related injuries, post-surgical rehab, and everything in between. I began focusing on my manual therapy skills (hands on skills), and I was being mentored by several seasoned physical therapists. After several years of treating all different types of injuries, I furthered my training by beginning a two-year certification in orthopedics manual physical therapy. After completing this coursework, I became certified in trigger point dry needling and began to see a lot of amazing results with my patients with chronic pain.
After working about 10 years in the busy outpatient setting, I decided the quality of care that I could provide was not what I wanted, and I decided to start Covenant Physical Therapy. I enjoy being the only practitioner that treats my patients for their continuity of care. With my hands-on approach, I need to feel how my patients are doing by assessing their soft tissues, joint mobility, muscle lengths, and fascial tightness and adjust their treatments accordingly. If I am working with techs and aids, this does not work well.
I also have enjoyed being out of network with insurance as this has given me the freedom to be able to treat one patient at a time and not be controlled by insurance and their reimbursements of only specific treatments. I feel this type of care really puts the patient in the driver’s seat as they can choose quality care and can get better much more quickly.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think the struggles at the beginning were just getting all of the legal stuff set up and being more comfortable with social media. I was never someone to be very present online, so I had to get over that!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
At Covenant Physical Therapy we specialize in manual (hands-on) physical therapy, dry needling, and exercise prescription. What sets us apart is our one-on-one care and access are patients have to us on off days for questions or concerns. We are most proud of all the happy patients we have seen get back to their active lifestyles and now know how to treat themselves at home.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Some of my favorite YouTube channels I enjoy working out with right now are nourish move love and postpartum tv. Both of these channels have great well-balanced workouts. I also love listening to Risen Motherhood podcast as a mom of 4.
